Start in Sydney, head North seems to be the classic route. Is Sydney the main backpacking centre in Aus/NZ? Best place to go if you want to meet other travellers? Thanks

In my opinion it is the place to start from if you're on your own. Stay in a hostels for the first couple of weeks and you will meet loads of people, some will want to stay and work for a bit in syd, others will prob head up the east coast.
