Varicocele experience, removal?

I've yet to see a thread about this issue, so if it is a commonly covered subject I'd be happy with a link and you can ignore this, but I was just wonder if anyone (men, presumably) has advice about varicoceles?

I've been to the doctor and told that's what it is, that there was nothing to be done about it and removal/fertility tests would only really be considered if I was trying to have children. More recently when I mentioned it was somewhat painful on occasion he recommended I wear briefs rather than boxers and, though I find these rather constricting, it does help the dull pain when it isn't replacing it with a squished-testicles one.

I suppose what I'm asking is if anyone has any advice (past briefs) on making this a little more comfortable. Right now and for the last short while it feels very noticable and large and unpleasant. Is there anything that you guys find helps to relax it or reduce the swelling in the veins or something. I don't know if I'm just being very conscious of it at the moment, as it's been here for years and I can't find anything about them randomly increasing in size, and it mostly looks the same as ever (albeit a couple of cm lower than it's neighbour)

My ideal solution would be to have it taken care of surgically, but my doctor didn't really present this as an option, and I'd imagine it would fall under voluntary/cosmetic and cost a bloody fortune. But I really don't like it as a feature of myself, makes me feel less than comfortable naked with people and makes it very difficult to search for testicle lumps, which is something I'm vaguely paranoid about.

And, for anyone unaware, this be what I refer to; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varicocele , apparently occurs in 15-20% of us, usually (like me) on the left. So I'm hopefully not the only person here with any issue with it...

I recently had mine dealt with surgically at Clane General Hospital with a Dr. Thornhill.

i had surgery in during the summer and the only difference is that the swelling isn't as painful and now i can physically push it back in..... yes i know sounds unpleasant... but it stll reoccurs now and again

before the op it would last for hours at a time......the surgeon was said my testicle was basically doing flips and twisting the blood vessel..... i knwew at the time he was wrong..... even the guy that did the ultrasound said it was a varacosel

even when i went back to him he said give it time to recover... and come back next spring ( this spring)....

the only advice i can give is that when it gets painful it always helped me to lie down so as to cancel the effect of gravity if you know what i mean

i was told to wear tight boxers/ briefs didin't work, neither did the scrotal support i got after the OP
