How to know if Timing chain on a Nissan almera is broken

    Hi,

I'm trying to buy a Nissan almera 1999/2000 on the cheap. I noticed from a few threads some people seem to have had problems with the timing chains while others never had to get them replaced. Is there an easy way to check for this when looking at a car?
I understand the chain can make a noise. Does anyone know what this sounds like? Scratchy, high pitched etc?

Are there any other pitfalls unique to this car by the way?

    thanks,
    D
