25-06?

Does anyone have any experience with a 25-06? It seems to be a very interesting round in terms of flatness and energy at distance. I’m doing a bit of research for a buddy and at the moment it is between this and a 308 for a few longer shots. There also seems to be a reasonable variety of bullet weights available from what I can make out.

Anyone using it or know a bit about it?

Hunting, sorry I should have said. Deer mainly. It is not the fellas only gun as he has a 243 also and will probably hang on to it, but looking to go a step up for something with more power at longer ranges.

    243 is good enough ?

243 is a great round and will definetly work with the right shot placement out to good ranges. I'm looking for something with a bit more for big deer at range on the hill.

    Sharpie,
    Good information on this thread:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055222635

The .243 Winchester, 25.06 and 6.5x55 SE are excellent deer calibers. Look for rifles with at least 22 inch barrels for use with hunting weight bullets (.243 & 6.5x55). The 25-06 Remington's barrel should be at least 24 inches with hunting weight bullets.

Ballistically, .243 and .25-06 are very similar; the .243 can go down to lighter bullets and the .25-06 can go a bit heavier, but there's not an awful lot to pick between them.
Would going up to 6.5x55 or .308 give more significant 'real world' results?

Thanks for the info DB and Rovi. The 25-06 just looks very interesting when looking at the stats on paper, but I do wonder a bit about the 'real world' (well put Rovi).

Right now i'm gone back to the 308 after reading what ye have to say and chatting with a few people and he has just went and ordered that.

I'm shooting a 6.5X55 myself and find it great. He just wants to be different.
