New Guitar Suggestions?

    Hey folks,

First time poster, long time lurker etc.

After a long playing hiatus (years!) I've decided to get a new guitar. I'd like to buy a versatile lefty electric which I can use with some effects (might splash out on a Pod aswell). I'm tempted to get an American tele cos I like the feel of the guitar but I'm not too sure about the jangly sound. Some people on boards seem to dislike the teles. I want to play some blues, alt.country, and even some metal on it, but I understand metal distortion will not sound too hot on a tele (?). Can you suggest some alternatives around my budget (1000-1500 euro)? I was thinking maybe a Les Paul Studio either. Help me out, I'm clueless.

    Thanks.

I'd say an SG Standard would be pretty good for ya IMO. Covers the blues and alt. country stuff with your neck pickup while the overall power of the guitar would be fairly decent for metal...all i can say is go to waltons and try em out, its the only way you will know for sure.

Why not a good old Strat?. You will be able to get a USA one for about that price?.

    Thanks for the replies.

Hadn't thought of the SG, are they not really heavy? The problem with being a lefty player is that the shops tend not to have a lot of stock, which makes trying guitars out impossible.

I was steering clear of the strats because I have an old strap copy and fancied something completely different, but maybe it is the most suitable, sound-wise ...

Is the Les Paul Studio well thought of ??

I wouldn't go for the LP Studio or a Gibson LP for that money. Get yourself onto Ebay and look for Bacchus or Tokai or Edwards LP copies. They are better than the Gibsons in your price range and a lot cheaper.

If you could find a Patrick Eggle Berlin in LH that would do you just perfect. They are humbucking guitars but most Berlins have a coil tap so you can split the humbucker into single coils. There are a couple of beautlful ones on Ebay at the mo albiet RH.

George if you gonna buy a Gibson you might as well stick an extra few hundred and get a LP Custom....You should be able to get one for around €2400 brand new. Studios are fine though 2 years down the line you will be looking to change again, you might as well save the expense and go the whole hog first time around....

Just had a look on Thomann, this LP Custom is 3900!! Bit out of my price range. Why are the Studios inferior to the Custom models? (sorry for my ignorance!)

Can someone confirm for me that the tele will sound sh*t if I crank some distortion and try to play some riffs on it?

It looks like the Strat might be the most versatile ... Any other opinions on this?

Teles are generally lovely instruments. I have a yamaha copy of a telecaster (pacifica 302) and it does the distortion thing fine. Check out this guy on youtube also . That's some sweet tone he's getting from a tele eh?

Tele's won't give you that metal tone with a single coil pickup. Great for country and blues though....unless you go for a Tele with a humbucker.

I have an Edwards Les Paul JS at the moment. Quality for about €750 all in (Tax + postage). Built as good as Gibson for a fraction of the price. I am a Gibson man, so i am selling it because i picked up a Gibson Les Paul standard for about €1000.

The Tele for you could be the John 5 one......looks class....he uses it for country chicken pickin' and metal......and maybe some blues.

There are some good deals with UK sellers on ebay at the moment with a weaker Sterling.....so have a look there.
