    Hi,

To cut a long story short i was loading windows 2000 onto a another hard drive on my Windows XP and i had to use the Windows XP setup disk to do a recovery install. This left me with SP1 so ive done all the updates to bring me to SP2. Anywho there was a problem with AVG and i just recently got the latest updates, shortly after doing the update it said i have a win32/Virut on a .exe file on my i:/ drive, which is where i store most of my files, then a couple of mins later i got another one saying i have another virus on another .exe in the same folder, then 20 mins later another on another exe file in a different folder on the same drive.

After reading around it appears this is a very bad virus and im basically going to have to format, im hoping i can format in time before it spreads to my c:/ driver where windows is installed, i have another 80gb spare drive where i can transfer all the files but i understand i cant transfer any .exe files as it might spread on the new drive, does this mean just having an .exe file will spread the virus or is it opening.

Anyway it seems that this virus often leads to not being able to even get into safe mode etc so it looks like ive caught it early, what i can now do to stop infection to my whole system and particularly my c drive, also how the hell will i copy a couple of gbs without copying an .exe files by mistake, can you do a msdos prompt to delete all files. Actually thinking about it now it seems more likely the virus is already in my c drive, just one thing i did use the i:/ drive which is a usb hard drive to install files onto another pc that had tons of viruses, maybe it has only infected the i drive??

Anyway please help with whats the best thing to do, im currently running AVG and AVG anti spyware and here is my hijack log although it seems to be clean but possibly avoiding detection:

Yes you may have to format

Lets see how badly infected you are

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:

        Hi,

Thanks for the reply, AVG ran and moved over 100 .exe files to the virus vault all win32/virut

This is where i store alot of data so only about 10% of those files were program executing files, the vast majority were just installer type files i kept in my temporary download folders so i guess i was a bit lucky.

I ran AVG again and this time it found none, im hesitant to restart windows as i feel it might make things worse but the virus was only found on the I:/drive so it looks like its contained and fortunately 90% of my programs are on my c:/drive which is clean so i seem to be lucky?

btw how come HijackThis didnt pick this up??

Anyway ive attached the log of Kasperspy as requested and it looks like a file i downloaded yesterday was the cause:mad: Guess lesson learned

Anyway i have a question, what does this virus done, it appears to have attached itself to lots of .exe files but does it only do the real damage when i open them files, if so as i suspect the virus is very new and i havent opened any of the .exe files on the drive then im lucky or am i or how does this work. Ive heard when this virus is in full swing it will completely fcuk with your systems and files and often stop you restarting successfully even in safe mode but i dont appear to be suffering any side effects other than im going to have to repair/reinstall several programs where the .exe files was removed.

Lastly out of interest and help in containing further viruses, i seemed to catch this early, this virus spreads by attaching to all the .exe files, would it have eventually spread to my windows drive and if so is there anything i can do to stop it spreading across drives while running virus checkers at the same time, like say use Zone Alarm to stop anyything move from one drive to another?

Any thanks for listening to my ramble, is it just a matter of deleting the files below and im free and safe and will restarting the pc have a bad effect, ive some windows update files and it keeps promption to restart it.

        Delete this folder

        I:\My Documents\DownloadsTemp\kf151.zip

Reboot and see if it is gone

The infection you have infects every legitimate .exe file that you have, so it depends how early you spot this infection. If it is early enough then it won't do too much damage, if you leave it too late then your system will be destroyed. Only a handful of anti-virus scanners would detect this virus.

HJT didn't find it cause it detects registry settings, and not files like scanners.

Other than that, everything seems ok. Are you having any visible problems ?

I deleted them and they didnt come back but it appears to have distributed the .zip file with the virus to another folder on the I drive so i done a complete scan and as you can see from the attached log theres also 2 more .zip files on the c drive. btw even though it shows 4 infected files its only 1 .zip file, it must be looking inside the .zip file at 3 more files but i have never opened these zip files since i noticed the problem and its not a folder just a file.

The good news is i ran a complete AVG scan and it hasnt picked up the virus on either drive so i found a tool on AVG that apperently removes the virus and im running it now, when thats finished ill shutdown system restore, restart in safe mode, delete them files and run AVG and skaperspy again and see if i get the all clear. btw skapersky doesent appear to know what the virus is so it might not be the win32.virut one i originally had.

Anyway thanks for your help so far, im glad ive avoided this.............Hopefully
