Dean is a hard hitting lightweight(maybe featherweight) i think, he's not a bad fighter and might be suited to the pro game, i sparred him in a competition as an exhibition and he was trying to knock me out, he did'nt though-not to hard to out box for the slick type imo, but a decent boxer..

Did he box in the Seniors a couple of years back for Crumlin as a 64kg fighter and do well
in one or two fights and then lose to Joyce I think??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,502 ✭✭✭MBC

Yeah Dean is a very slick boxer........was very unlucky when it came to all ireland finals think he lost 2 or 3 in a row losing by count backs or by a single point.
I could be mistaken here but im pretty sure he beat Joyce a couple of times aswell.

Didnt realise he was in the states now.......really hope he does well a lovely lad.

If it's the Byrne I'm thinking of, then slick wouldn't be the word I'd use
to describe him. He was from what I saw of him, a ball of energy. Very aggressive and all action. Slick and cute I wouldn't say. Effecetive?..YES...

    Am I corrct here?

That would be my take on him too, aggressive and strong, did not seem to like fighting the boxer type..

Saw Byrne a few times in the Stadium and was always impressed. Very agressive, strong with good stamina and IMO wasn't a bad boxer at all - even though I wouldn't go so far as to call him slick. I always thought his style would suit the pros better, so I hope I'm proven right.

Is he for certain with Freddie Roach ? I thought he was based in Oz ?

yeah he is with roach a few months now. A relation of mine spent a few days with dean in vegas at the hatton mayweather fight. He is a good lad and will hopefull do well he seems to have his head screwed on and doing things right

Sparmates lined up to test Pacquiao

Tuesday, February 5, 2008 Manny Pacquiao begins serious sparring at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles tomorrow (Manila time) and trainer Freddie Roach has assembled a formidable cast of nine fighters, including three new undefeated contenders, to mimic Juan Manuel Marquez’s style.
It won’t be easy beating Marquez who survived three knockdowns in the first round to salvage a split 12-round draw with Pacquiao in their first meeting in 2004. A technician whose trademark is crisp counter-punching, Marquez is expected to give Pacquiao plenty of trouble in their much-awaited rematch at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on March 15.
But boxing scholar Hermie Rivera, writing from Newark, California, said there’s no doubt in his mind that Pacquiao will dispose of Marquez convincingly inside the distance.

To prepare for Marquez, Roach is tapping unbeaten Dean Bryne, Juan Garcia and Daniel Cervantes to trade blows with Pacquiao in the gym. They’re newcomers in Pacquiao’s team. Also in the rotation is amateur hotshot Adrian (A-Game) Gallon, Jr. Others in the lineup are holdovers Ray (Sugar) Beltran and David Rodela. Three more unnamed sparmates will be added to the list just in case there are casualties along the way.

Byrne, 23, is a lightwelterweight with a 6-0 record. Garcia, 21, is a superfeatherweight whose record is 14-0, with five KOs. Cervantes, 22, is a lightwelterweight with a record of 9-0. None is a devastating puncher but lack of power is negated by superior boxing skills.

Did a quick search and came across the wild card website http://www.wildcardbc.com/ he's trained by Roach alright. Would like to see him over here at some stage, his record is decent for 9 fights, he's clearly getting great training in and is said to be exciting.

A friend of mine from crumlin was telling me about Dean about 2 years ago when he went to australia I think he's 10-0 now and is regarded as a prospect ??

There was an article on him last week in one of the papers (herald or star I think) I'd say he's a "watch this space"....

I interviewed Dean a couple of weeks ago and he is a lovely lad.

    http://www.britishboxing.net/news_4517-BBN22-Podcast-Dean-Byrne-and-Lenny-Daws.html

It was before his fight in MSG was cancelled so it had to be edited a bit.

Just go down the list of podcasts and it is there.

If you want to leave any comments great, only good ones though:D

By the way, if you hate the Dublin accent, turn away now.

Jesus, I thought I had a thick accent, wait till you hear Dean's.;)

The good news about Friday's fight is that Dean won a Unanimous decision(76-73, 76-73, 77-72), and floored his opponent 3 times.

However the bad news is that without those knockdowns he would of only had a draw, and those knockdowns came within the first 4 rounds aswell, which means they were either flash knockdowns or he had his man hurt and couldn't finish him.

I hope to see Byrne fight sometime in the near future but from what I've seen in sparring I'm not that hopeful. Any faith I have in him is simply based around Freddie Roach working with him, and presumely seeing something in him.

I wish him the best, and genuinely hope he does well, but I'm very hesitant to proclaim what he can do till I see a full fight of his, all I've seen so far is knockout clips and sparring.
