You can get by in Thailand whatever your budget. If you want to know how much stuff will cost you - then you have to provide more info -

    1.just you backpacking?
    2. Kids involved?
    3.Happy to rough it?
    4.5 star all the way?
    5. Places you want to visit?

Thailand is cheap .. enough. Depends on what you are doing. Hostels are cheap and you can pay more if you wish for certain things such as Air con and hot water in the showers.

Further down the country in say the likes of Koh Tao it is cheaper than Samui, or Bangkok.

Eats are cheap, usually in the region of 100 to 200 baht for a decent meal with a beer (about 4€) and it does depend on what you eat. If you go for the local food its cheap, western or european food can be more expensive and not what you expect.. ie chips means about 10 to 12 shoestring style chips :)

McDs/BK/Subway are all overpriced in Thailand. they are nearly the same price as home.

Clothes are cheap if you can haggle. And generally you wont mind if they dont last too long especially if you pay something like 2€ for a t shirt!

Travel, trains are good value, especially the overnight ones. Buses depending on what you get can be a bit hit or miss especially with some of the more shady operators. Flights internally can be very expensive due to monopolies on certain airports.

Overall its not that expensive. I was there for 5 weeks in May till June and spent about 1500€ but that did include diving for 2 weeks in Koh Tao and flights to Cambodia and back and a 2 person ticket from Samui to Bangkok at the last minute.

    Hope that helps

Myself and 8 of my mates are heading over for six weeks during the summer aswell were going into trailfinders tomorrow afternoon to book it. We got our flights for €750 with a stop off in Amsterdam.
From what ive been hearing from ppl who have went before is that although it is getting more expensive you can still live comfortably on a small enough budget, decent accomodation can be found for €8 but preferbly i would be prepared to pay more to get a nice place to stay the most my friend payed last year was €15.
I would be bringing around €2500 with me so i presume that should be enough to last me as it was enough for six weeks island hopping around greece for six weeks which was expensive last year.
Nearly eveyone from greece last summer are going to Thailand this year so it's going to be like 92 in the sun all over again.

i don't actually know tbh my mate was on the phone to Trailfinders earlier because their website isn't the best at all. It's the cheapest price we could find and we know alot of people flying with them so we thought it was the best option.

KLM most likely. My advice would be to stay just a day or two in Bangkok and head south to the islands. It's gonna be cheap everywhere compared to what you are used to.

yeah i think that's what we were going to do.A few people wanted to stay in bankok for a few days but most of us were against it because we just want to get down to the islands as soon as we can because after all bangkok will just be another city. I would like to see bankok but it wouldnt be top of my agenda really much prefer travelling around the islands and maybe visit cambodia or somewhere like that.

Yeah i'm going in today after the senior cup match i'll let u know but Trailfinders seems to be a lot cheaper than anywhere else we could find so that would probably be your best bet and you can book over the phone if you don't wish to trek into town.I'll PM you later on anyway.

because after all bangkok will just be another city.
Wrong, unless you have been to anywhere like Beijing,Hong Kong, KL etc before. Bangkok is one of the best cities I've ever been to. It is so vibrant, always on the go, the sights, sounds, smells of the city. It's definitely worth a couple of days exploring. For presents it's worth getting back up to BKK before you fly home to get to the weekend market in Chatachuk, it's absolutely enormous.
Have fun though. Koh Tao is beautiful and excellent fun for diving.

There's no such thing as being right or wrong about whether a city is nice or not its down to opinion and from what ive heard from people around the same age as me who have went there it doesn't sound appealing to me. Although i'm only 20years old i'm fairly well travelled and actually have been in Kuala Lumpur before.also i heard the smell is one of the reasons i wouldnt visit the city.

Nope, I never said anything about being wrong or right about a city being nice, I said that Bangkok is not 'just another city'.
And it doesn't have 'the smell', it has many smells. I don't recall any of them being bad, other than when sitting in a tuktuk in a traffic jam. The odours of the streetfood are all around and it's delicious.
If you have been through Chinatown in KL, then that is similar to, but calmer than BKK. I would consider living in both KL and BKK if the opportunity of a job arose.

I'd guess at that prce that you wil be flying china airlines

They are pretty hit and misss - flew them in Jan, fantastic plane AMS-BKK
    Banger on teh way home...

Didn't stop me booking them again for next trip...

April 17th for Songkran - best time ever to visit Thailand - as long as you don't mind the heat and getting destroyed with water and powder during Songkran (Thailand new year and water festival)

I usually budget €100 per day for a thai holiday (but then i tend to stay in fairly decent hotels)

Agree with Kenc - BKK is not just another city - have never came across anything like it... I too have never gotten this much fabled "smell"
But then again I've never visited Ko San Road!
