I'm guitarist of about 4years looking to buy a powerful hlafstack. I play a jackson DXMG and squire Stratocaster. I have a marshall valvestate combo but that is cutting out and is kind of restricting. I'm looking for an amp with good distortion and hope to get a cab and head for no more than 900 euro. I would want an amp with good distortion and the type of distortion i would be looking for can would be something like fightstar / foo fighters / general rock (anything with that range if possible). Would I be wanting a valve amp? I have been looking at the peavey valve king head, I see that it got great reviews but I don’t know. Does anybody have one?? What Cabinet would I then be wanting?? do they make a huge difference?? Good distortion is what I want. Ca anybody recommend ideas of amps and cabs that would suit my needs all help is appreciated

If you're looking for a versatile amp, with a budget like that, a safe bet for you would be a Marshall TSL100 with a 1960 cabinet, or (My preference) a Hughes and Kettner Switchblade. Ive had nothing but a pleasureable playing experience from Hughes & Kettner amps, they're simply marvellous.

Peavy Valve King.....A mate of mine used to own one. Wasnt a huge fan of it. It WAS a tube amp, but to be perfectly honest, it sounded no better than a ****ty practice amp...like a Line 6 Spider or something. Not a good choice, at least, I thought so.

As for cabs....As long as its a cab with Celestions, or Eminence speakers, you cant go far wrong.

If I were you, it'd be a Switchblade all the way...

under 900e your best bet might be a marshall valvestate half, i used to have one which was pretty good, just a bit awkward but if its good quality your lookin for mite be a good idea to save a few extra quid and buy a marshall valve combo?

For less than 800 you could get a Fender Deluxe. It's just a quality amp and much neater than a head and cab and better suited if you're playing the likes of Crawdaddy/Hub. For me it gives a great start point on which to use whatever pedals you need to increase drive etc.

But it might not be RAWK enough for you.

Two of us in our band have fender valve amps and we swear by them.

There's an ad (adverts.ie) for a Fender MH500 half stack for less than 900 €... i would go for that if i were you... played the amp in gardiner lane studios weekly and it's a beast. (solid state)
