Going to Lyon in a few weeks, done a search on here and didn't come up with a lot on this city, has anyone been there and if so any information would be appreciated.

    Cheers

Was there shortly before Christmas. Great place for food (it's considered the gastronomic capital of France). I also loved Les Halles, which sell foodstuffs but also has a good number and variety of eating opportunities. Good range of things to see from Roman to modern (try the open-top bus tour to get oriented). Charming old town quarter. Funicular up to high points for good views. I think there is good shopping, but we didn't go into many shops. Very good fine arts museum, which was particularly welcome on a day when temperatures were close to zero and there was a cold wind as well.

Anything in particular you are interested in?

cheers for the info, nothing in partcular really just the usual touristy stuff, is it expensive as well, and what are the bars/clubs like?

I didn't think it expensive -- but I wasn't worried about minding the pennies. A good-quality meal for two with a bottle of half-decent wine costs less than €100. There are more economical options, but I wasn't looking for them.

I'm in the wrong age-group to comment on the bar/club scene. There are lots of young people around (it's a university city) so there's bound to be a lively scene -- you just have to find where it is. I'd start in Vieux Lyon (the old quarter) if I was looking for it; I found myself in a couple of bars where I was surrounded by bright young things. Herself tightened the leash!

It's a long way from the airport into the city, and we took a taxi which cost a bomb. Research your options. There is a bus wHich costs about €10, I think.

Public transport in the city is good, and all-day tickets are cheap -- I think under €5, and you get them from machines in the metro stations. They cover metro, trams, buses, trolleybuses, and the funiculars.

Do you know where you will be staying?

Just wondering if anyone could recommend a good hostel or affordable hotel/guest house to stay in Lyon for 2 nights?
