I have UPC broadband eircom phone and Sky Plus I was thinking of getting my tv and phone from UPC also.
What is the dvr epg like in operation?

Does it have a new epg? that purple thing on the NTL boxes was useless.

Does anybody have any screen shots of the dvr epg?

    Also is the pvr good?

    Thanks in advance.

A quick search of this forum will answer all your questions.

I'll get you started...DVR Manual loads of screen shots on all major functions of the box.

    Hey all ,
I work for ntl/upc in Dublin. The Dvr is the way forward. Install them everyday. EPG is Perfect, 7 day full listing always not like the small dc221kn box most people have. I have the Dvr myself. Girlfriend loves it. You will never miss a thing. Worth the upgrade. 5 euro extra per month tho

I got the UPC PVR in November, and it is a huge improvement over the older cable box, but it is nothing compared to Sky +.
    • You can only record one channel at a time.
    • It is noisey.
    • The EPG is very slow and regularly inaccurate.

If I could get Sky installed in my apartment I would do it tomorrow.

Yeah, wouldn't say the EPG is perfect - it can be slow, it only allows you to see now and next on the mini-epg and I've often had to restart the box because the EPG either disappears or starts getting messy in other ways... that said it's a huge improvement on the previous one, no doubt.

Ok, whatever about points 1 and 3, but point 2 "it is noisey"... No it's not, it's no where near the noise of Sky+ and don't even get me started on how loud SkyHD is! unless you're sitting in a room, with not external noise, and the volume on the TV muted and you're listening out for the sound of the fan that kicks in the odd time, you won't hear a thing!!

i have to agree with belmulletman - it's not noisy - well i only have it for 4 days, hopefully it stays at is.

can indeed be noisy, but tends to be exacerbated by having it in an enclosed space. I had same problem and moved the box from my TV shelf to the ground, hence sound wasn't magnified. No guarantee it will work, but worth a try.

Must admit to being baffled by the noise comments. My one does not make a sound, and on start up I can hear a slight 'whirr' but it's very low.
I honestly do not hear anything from it during use, no matter where it's positioned.

Think Sky's would be noisier, but noisiest of all would be an Xbox 360!!

As for UPC engineer, you really couldn't call the EPG perfect, it is a major improvement, but has some series flaws.

No Series Link is the biggest flaw.
You can only record 1 program at a time.
    No search or A-Z
Mini guide only shows now and next as already stated and it often sticks on my screen and is hard to clear.
DVR shows conflicts with consecutive programmes even when on same channel.
I also miss the end of programmes quite a bit despite having a 10 min extra record set.

Just received the UPC brochure in the post recently about the DVR and they compare the DVR to Sky+. They state that there is more recording time due to larger hard disc(True) and cheaper than Sky which is debateable as you do not pay a monthly fee with Sky. But the fact that these are the only 2 positives that UPC can come up with says to me that they know themselves that their offering is just not as good as Sky's!

I'm a committed Sky+ user but thought I'd check out the competition - from what I've read I don't think I'll be changing. Probably the biggest drawback with the UPC DVR is the lack of series link - technically how hard is it to implement?

Thanks for all the replys you have all made it easy for me make up my mind.

Sky plus is the better product I will stick with it.
Also a friend made the point that if my power ever goes off I will lose the UPC digital phone as this is connected to the modem.

So it's Sky for my tv Eircom for my phone and UPC for my internet messy I know but I think its the best option for me.

UPC have stated in public that series linking is on the way.

Slightly off topic I know but I just had a look at UPC.nl and they had a video up about digital tv and it shows a new EPG which is white and has the new UPC "flower" logo on it...
I've attached a screencap for ye to have a look at:

Nice looking new EPG. Fingers crossed we get it! Don't like the blue.

Well that picture is obviously from the Dutch UPC system which, to be honest, is purely cosmetic. New DVR EPG is similar in layout but is more based in blue/black/purple colours.

For me the new EPG here in Ireland is fine and the bigger issues functionality problems such as no series link etc.( as posted already on this topic)

Just got a new upc "mediabox" dvr from chorus ntl. I think its really noisy. It makes a high pitched whirring noise all the time. Sounds almost like a fridge in the room. Very irritating when watching movies etc. Today is Sunday so haven't called customer support or anything yet. If I bought a cheap cd player and it made noise like this I would bring it back to the shop and get my money back. I have a depressing feeling I'll have a fruitless struggle to get any satisfaction with this.
