What's the best phone to get if you're backpcking round world, where to buy it?

I'm heading to Australia, what is the best mobile to have if you're travelling from place to place & want to keep in touch with people back home & people you meet on the way? Where woud you buy it? Would it be better to get a phone abroad or sould I take my own Meteor ready to go phone? Thank You

I would recommend the Sony Eircsson K800i with a digital camera that has 3.2million pix. The only downside is you get your credit on the last day of each month which is €10.00.
