Well i was doingwork expereince today and had to go to the local town to meet up with the photographer and we were going to take some photo's at a girls U13 indoor soccer blizt. When i arrived i got a call saying he wont have enough time to do it so ill have to.He said to shoot 2 teams and in the end i got 4 teams and have chosen my best/favourite group shot of each. Now i shot raw(A first for me) and iv processed the photos to Show all faces clearly.Sadly havent got a paper to hand so is a tight crop good?So there is barely any background(Which is quiet distracting)And in the file info will i just put the caption as there names and age group

    Thanks
Cant upload photos as the paper want to use them and their rivals might get their hands on them :p

A tight crop is a must for sports photography.

LOL, sounds like you just got used :D

I'd be with the above, though. tight as you can

A good tight crop, and all the info/caption details as much as you can. You can either put this in the EXIF data or details in your submission.

Well done, and best of luck with it.

Well done on getting printed. Work experience is excellent and sounds like you are getting some great practical advice. Dont think about money at the moment, it wont do your chances any good demanding money when on work experience. Do the work well and how they ask and it might lead to some part time work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

Press/sports photography doesn't pay well anyway, so I wouldn't worry about it. Nice to get published all the same.

    For definite, keep practicing.

I sent some of my shots to the sports editor (friend of mine) of the Herald & Indepedent and he said some of them were pretty good.

Asked me if I would be interested in freelance work at kids games but I told him I wanted to keep practicing before I started putting pressure on myself.

Its always good to say thats my image even if its in a local paper.

I was told that by the photographer
He said "Dont take work off any newspaper till you're certain you've reached that level!" or else they'll be farely p***sed off if you turn up with useless pictures for a story they've paid a journalist to cover.Im still going to email photos to the paper's and magazines and if they want them they can use them!Id just be happy to see them in the paper

I'd actually be a bit cautious sending your stuff in for free, even just to see them printed. They will get used to your free work, and then you may find it hard to charge them, even when you reach a skill level you're happy with.

Of course, it's totally up to you. But, giving things for free like that may (in the long term) devalue the work you do and the experience you build up.

But i want to get to a stage where i know they are going to get printed and i know they like them!Unless i send photo's to the photographer im working with i have no other option! The second i see photo's of mine in there ill get in contact with them and see if i can do abit of freelance and she how it goes :D on local matches near me

Good idea about that but i dont say they are free i just emial them the pics and write abit about where n when they are taken

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

I think there comes a stage, where you just know your stuff is quality enough for print. You get to know what you're doing and what you're looking for (and more importantly, knowing what they look for).

It can be just a matter of comparing the shots you take to the ones you see printed (even for the same games).

Of course, with just sending them in, you can always invoice them a month or so later, if they use your image. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 707 ✭✭✭OnLooker

I always compare images of games & some of the images they publish ain't great.

I often think how are these lads getting pay :confused:

    Yeah iv seen that allright
looking at the pic of the Arklow vs listowel celtic the photographer took was a good bit better than mine so i know iv got a bit to go

If you give stuff away for free, ask them for a letter of accreditation so you can use it to get media access to bigger events, thats what I did when I started. It doesnt take much then to sell the shots to bigger publications while keeping the original contact sweet with one or two.

    Hiya Ricky,
i see u were thrown in at the deep end, your not dead, so u can swim, I think its best to be left to ur own devices and your doing a good job, i was about your age when i got my first camera, Canon eos rebel, cant remember the lens, but kit i suppose, anyway i knew nothing about photography, i thought u just look tru the viewfinder and press the button, there were all these settings i hadnt a clue about, i bought some magazines and looked at the pics and wanted to know how they took them pics, coz i couldnt, but i learned from the first mag i bought, i didnt understand speed, f-stop, fill in, apature, second curtain sync, and we had no internet, etc, etc.
We werent born with this knowledge, its something we must have an eye for, an interest in, and learn, and your the best pupil in the class, i really think you'll go a long way, i really do, and i wish u the best. Dont mind what ppl think, do what u do and keep ur interest.......

If you actually read the thread properly, you'll find people are doing their best to offer assistance to help people progress. I'd say all of the advice here is from people who have been published - magazines, papers, etc.

All the posts are encouraging people to photograph, get your work out there, but at the same time, don't give things away for free. You should have confidence in your own ability, skill and work, and it has a price. If the printed image would pay another photographer, then there is no reason why you shouldn't also be paid.

The brilliant thing about boards is that it's full of people with diverse skills and experience, and all more than willing to help each other.

But Paul our work experience teacher informed us for this week no matter what we do we dont get paid(we might get paid but its the employers choice)he said all employers know we are'nt meant to get paid for the week but some do.i have freinds working on builing sights and in mechanics they might have a shed built in this week and they might get €40 if they are lucky maybe nothing. And you'd get alot more money for laying blocks for a week than a photographer! This is my work experience John obviously thought i was well able to take the photos and if he wanted he could of made it to the place and took the pictures he was there while i was taking the last two and he only needed two we ended up being early for the next one.Im really pleased that i got to take those it was all left up to me no one was there to say "no use a flash or change your lense etc" i felt really happy doing it and its just a reward to see stuff in the paper. If i get money then yes ill be happy but if i dont i can always apply for a job later on and they'll remember me.I know all of you dont want me to be a push over an give them free images and i wont!I just think now is my oppurtunity to show the editor and mature and wel able to take photos for them and everything else can be sorted out when i go to apply for a job

So thank you everyone for the support but i really just want to have a good time enjoy myself and get to know the people in the job etc

    .

+1 , if photography is chosen as a career , you will need to earn cash --- every other craft/ profession/trade charge huge amounts for there services today, but for some reason people think photography should be free or worth little money, should be done for love -- love won't pay the bills

but good to get experience (is it transistion ?)

Look i understand that all but iv explained why in the post above that i wont get paid(i might though)
No im doing the L.c.v.p(Leaving certificate vocational project! Its to get you ready for the working world etc!So its a break for us after Junior Cert year and then Leaving cert exmas the year after :D

Ricky, I wasn't having a go at you at all. I understand how work experience goes, and while you're doing it, it's unlikely you'll get paid. I was more talking about when the work experience is over, and you then submit your images.

If you are to be considered a professional photographer (no matter what age or experience), then you need to have faith in your own ability. You need to know that your images are quality enough to be published. You need to understand that if you act like a pro, you'll be treated like a pro. If you get the right shots, then you should certainly be paid (the going rate) for those shots.

We all have to start somewhere. Yeah, seeing your photo in print for the first time is a thrill, but getting paid after seeing your image in the paper is more of a thrill. ;) It'll also then enable you to buy more and more gear. :D

But, the most important thing of it all -- go enjoy yourself. Everything else is secondary.

sorry i was not refering to anybody in the above threads, i was just telling ricky to do what he wants, i didnt mean to sound like i was putting anybody down, rather to put ricky up, and i know a little criticism always helps, we all need it, but all i wanted was to boost his morale.....
    Shakey

Ah in fairness I think Paul already knew that, Shakey :)

None of the people on here (even Oriel - believe it or not) really want anything but good for the others on here, and to help them along in what they're doing. It's why there's C&C threads, sure :)

I think I can speak generally and say that we're all pleased to see a friend/fellow boardsie's work being printed and see what they get out of it. But the point a few of us are trying to make is, as Barry put quite nicely - love doesn't pay the bills - and we don't want to see someone on here be used.(even if its future proof information for them :D)
