Is this allowed in EU countries?

    I'm just curious about this...

Are job adverts allowed to specify that applicants must have an 'Irish' driving licence?. I would have thought given that EU citizens are allowed to move around freely and work wherever this would discriminate against people who aren't natives (or significantly long-term residents) of the country in which they're applying for the job?

I understand it may stipulate in the company insurance arrangements that drivers have an 'Irish' licence but that's something easily fixed. The application I'm filling out only allows me to answer yes or no and as a licence is required for the job, if I say no that'll blow my application right out of the water.

(PS: I am in NI applying for a job that states I must have a 'UK' licence when mine is ROI).

    Thanks much.

i think if u were intending to reside there for over a year, then u wud have to get a uk licence..
You could always call the recruitment agency/company or get the necessary forms for a uk licence?

I know that technically I would exchange my licence after a year, but in the meantime I'm an undesirable on a foreign licence ;) I was going to give them a call on Monday but just wanted to clarify if that's an acceptable requirement for the position. Not that I want to row about it, but I think especially in NI there are an awful lot of people driving on Irish licences and no-one else seems to take issue with it.

yeah, thats true...best bet would be to give them a call on monday, cud depend on what type of job it is and if there was much travelling involved.

This most certainly depends on the type and area of the job in N.Ireland.

    Were abouts is it.

It's in Derry. It's a UK based company. I've lived and worked in the mainland UK for years and have never had a problem before...I'm sure if I query it they'll loosen it up, unless I get some twit (which I probably will) answering the phone on the recruitment helpline, based in England.

Changing your foreign (EU) driving license for a local one isn't required anymore.

I would say that in most cases where 'Irish Driving Licence' or 'UK Driving Licence' they mean license that's locally valid/exchangeable. Ring them and find out if they explicitly require the UK licence.

Exactly. They mean: You need to be able to legally drive in Ireland to do this job.

    +2
There is no longer any requirement to swap an EU licence for a native one.

Yea well it shouldnt be an issue however if the company is providing you with a company car/wagon there insurance policy might state "Full UK licence holders" etc etc...

But if its your own car then that cereal box selective licence you have at the minute will do fine.

What kind of job is it?
