My classmate had their laptop stolen recently. I'm pretty careful with mine but was thinking of picking up one of these type of things for my Macbook, however I don't know which one to go for or if they'd be available in Dublin. Any pointers would be good, ta.

Any of the Kensington ones will be fine - none of these type of computer locks are of a serious construction, compared to say, a bicycle lock, but the idea is that they stop people casually picking up a computer and walking off with it like they own it - it is expected that there will be enough people around to discourage someone from having a serious go at it with bolt-cutters or the like.

I was looking at one of these in the shop today and I don't understand how they work. Once locked to the laptop are you meant to secure the cable to some other non-moving object? What does it actually do to deter theft?

It locks the screen down, so you'd either have to carefully damage the lock, or damage the laptop. They're pretty handy I guess, but I mean, if someone want's the laptop, it's gonna be gone by the time they notice it.

Gotcha. And what about remote laptop security software? Are there any available for macs?

there was one i saw mentioned here before actually, it ran in the background silently and when it was opened up it took a picture and emailed it to you.

although not really ideal if the person has any sense to wipe the driver before using it.

That Mac alarm software is pretty cool, if a bit gimmicky. If the laptop is opened, turned on, a button pressed, mousepad moved, or it's lifted or moved around at all - even the power cable coming out, it takes a pic and emails it to you, aswell as making a bit of noise.

The BMW alarm noise is pretty funny too!

If you're looking for a physical look they're very handy. I can leave mine in the studio in college and go off around town for lunch and the laptop will be fine. Its a good deterrent. I bought one in the laptop shop for 25eur.. the kingston ones are 50eur in peats BUT a few of my friends have now bought them in the 2euro shop and they work perfectly. Basically the exact same!!

Amazon won't ship the locks to Ireland from either their .com or .co.uk sites.
