sata to pata converter

I bought a sata to pata converter from ebay to reuse a 300gb ide drive in my new machine, but I can't get the drive recognised. The converter itself is a paddle board with an ide data connector on one side to connect to the drive. On the other side is a sata connector - I connected this to the mobo with the supplied cable.

There is another connector which appears to be power on the paddle card. This confused me because I don't understand how the drive could take power through the ide interface. There was a spare connection in the pc with 4 discrete power cables going into it (way smaller than the od ide sized connectors) and this fits the connector on the paddle card. But the PC hangs on boot with the HD light stuck on.

There was a second cable with the card that has the small format power connector that fits the power connector on the paddle card, but the other end was the old large format ide power connector - a male connecter with only two of the 4 pins. I have no clue what this is for as it fits nowhere.

Can anybody shed any light on where I might be going wrong?

The second cable with the card is to power the card if you install it in an older system that does not have SATA power connectors. The clue is that it has only two pins (5V and GND) which will power the card but it could not be used to power a drive as a drive needs all four (12V, 5V and two GND).

Assuming you have SATA power connector running to the card and a PATA power connector running to the drive, I suspect the problem lies elsewhere. Maybe you need to jumper the drive to Master or Slave or CS - check the documentation that came with the card.

I also have this with the same problem. I hooked adapter onto my IDE HDD and then connected the SATA to the SATA in the MOBO, with power going to both the card and that HDD, its not showing up when i bot up the PC. its a 320GB HDD

I tried different pin settings, the computer is still not picking up the HDD? Anyone any ideas?

This is the adapter i bought IDE SATA Adapter I hooked it up to my 320 IDE HDD and it didn't show up on my system. Got on to seller and told me he'd replace it, sent back the one i had and got another 1. It still would work. I removed the cover and it clearly says on the board that SATA 1 is for IDE HDD to SATA Motherboard. So i am thinking it maybe a proble with setting on my part. i have pin settings set to slave. can anyone tell me how i can get this drive working????

    Thanks

Squibs - Did you find a solution to your problem? I have the exact same problem and need to find a solution. Thanks.

I'm afraid not. I ended up buying an external USB enclosure.

I'd only rely on these converters as a temporary measure at best. If you want the drive inside the PC, better solution would be PCI card with SATA and PATA connectors - I have one in an older machine to do the opposite of what you guys are trying to achieve, use a SATA drive in a PC too old to have any SATA connections, and it works very well, I've had no speed issues or errors of any kind. These cards can come with 1 or 2 IDE connections (mine has one). Costs a bit more than those converters, but I've been using it for months without any issues.
