I see a lot of business analysts CVs but I very rarely see official training or business analysis courses on them. The experience they have would make them business analysts more than any qualifications (although all BA jobs I get in require a third level business degree).

Thanks watna, my primary degree is in computer science and I have done some prince2 training, so working as a PM/BA is something i want to do but I don't have business apart from JC business studies.

If you've done computer science originally and some prince2 training I'd recommend thinking about IT Project management over business analysis. It'd be a good idea to get your prince2 certification or PMI/PMP membership too. There's also IT analyst positions which are similar to business analysts without the business part obviously! You'd work on projects advising on IT solutions. You would need some business experience in taht you'd have to understand business problems and come up with IT solutions. That depends on your previous experience of course. i.e. have you been in senior customer facing IT roles?

I wouldnt say senior but pretty much all of my roles are customer facing and usually deal with different levels of the business which I am assigned to.

    Hmm..

Have you had a look around at jobs that are out there at the moment? Did you see many IT BA roles? I mainly deal with BAs within banking, withthe occasional IT Analyst role. I'm not sure what is out there for IT BAs etc.

I have asked the same question regarding BA courses. The one you mentioned is more in line with Project Management/Change Management. The term Business Analyst seems to incorporate a lot different roles and can span across all sectors. In many cases Software Developers move into these type of roles as they have knowledge of UML, functional specifications etc. I have also seen people who had prior Project Management roles move into Senior Business Analyst roles. There are some overlapping qualities between the two.

There are some Msc courses that would suit potential BA's but you may have to go abroad to get the best. London have one or two very good ones.

Thanks moneky, I have noticed that most BA roles can vary from funds to IT and anywhere in between. I have a lot of junior PM exp as i spend most of my time on customer sites in ireland or abroad so it is something that i enjoy, thanks for all the info.

Good luck with it all anyway! In my experience, Business Analyst is the vaguest job term and one BA role can be completely different from another. I'm sure you'll find something to suit you!
