Is anybody else severly frustrated by people's complete ignorance of lane usage on our roads? I travel from Newbridge to Dublin and home every day down the Naas road and I see an empty slow lane and people hogging the fast lane. Then you have nutters weaving in and out of lanes because they can't pass on the fast lane or middle lane. Why is it so hard for people to use the middle and outside lane just for overtaking and then move back into the slower lane to allow other people to pass?

I get frustrated just watching how people blatantly ignore the rules of the road. I'm a strong believer that only strict enforcement will help sort this out. Unfortunately it seems unpopular with those in power/

This has been discussed to death over on the Motors forum, but I agree with you 100%. I travel that every day. In the morning when I can (its usually quietish around 6am) I use every opportunity to get into the left lane, even if only for a few seconds. I suppose my hope is that the other lane hoggers will notice this and follow suit....... I'm still waiting

The traffic corp should just go out and pull people for it (no penalty points or anything but just point it out to people)

Proper enforcement, coupled with proper fines. Hit people where it hurts. None of this namby-pamby €75 for a motoring offense (actually, what are the fines these days).

Make the fines upwards of €1000 per offense and you will start seeing results.

Last Sunday night I drove back up from Cork. Around Nass as the end of the Motorway I moved into the left most lane, and had the lane to myself all the way to City West.

Now I am not sure if I broke the law for undertaking, but I set my speed to 100kph, and kept going. This meant I overtook cars on my right. I think I was breaking the law. But the way I see it is, I am in the left most lane and will move out to overtake. If cars outside me drive slower than that, that is their problem.

I think a big problem is that many people don't know the proper function of the lanes. Calling it the 'fast lane' just makes people think it's ok to sit in it, while if people started referring to it more as the 'overtaking lane' maybe more will understand.

I believe the rules of the Road state, you may overtake on the left at a junction if the car in front of you is turning right and you wish you go left or straight ahead, OR in lane traffic when the lane you are in is moving faster than the lane on your right.

you're not breaking any laws unless you're weaving in and out of lanes like a crazy person

You can hardly blame Sean and Maire citizen when official documents and websites refer to the "fast" lane and the gantry signs on the N7 imply that you have to be in the two outer lanes if you are going to Dublin.

Don't complain about people's ignorance of lanes when you yourself are ignorant of what lanes are supposed to be called!!:)
