    Hi guys,
i haven't posted on here in ages due to a severe lack of an internet connection over the past few months :(
I have a question for all you nice posters?
Does anyone know how many Renault 9's and 11's are still driving around in Ireland? I ask this because I was driving through Limerick last night in my Punto (for my sins) and to my surprise and delight I ended up behind a 9! It was a louisiane model, and I must say that in the dark it looked to be in perfect condition.

I know there also used to be a late model (I think it was an '88/89) silver R9 in one of the villages along the N7, but that seems to have dissappeared. and there was also one in Dublin around the same vintage. And i met pre 87 model R11 on the ballysimon road during the summer, but it was somewhat battered...

For those of you who are interested, my own 9 broadway is currently off the road undergoing light restoration , and some preventative maintanence which is taking alot longer than I first envisaged. (ie, the brake master cyllinder failed, and I had to order one in from Renault france....)

Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Beir Bua,
    Breandán

Haven't seen a Renault 11 in ages. I always like them, especially the front of them, they always remainded me of the DeLorean DMC-12.

I did see a R9 at the Moynalty show last year. It was a white one with English plates. First one I've seen in years.

I took a picture of it:

Hllo Breandan.....good to hear from another French car fan.I actually stopped and enquired about that silver R9 on the N7 on an aimless weekend cruising around last year.I think it was in Moneygall and belonged to a former President of the GAA who recently died.Disappointing to hear it has disappeared.

    Hi Breandán,
As you say there are not to many Renault 9/11's left in Ireland. I have worked on these for many years and I know them well. Many parts can interchange. Provided your 9/11 is non turbo the R5 (super5) parts can be used. Chassis parts like sub frame, brake calipers, A - arms, bearings, hubs can be used. Rear brake components can be taken and used and on the early 19's (89-93) the complete rear axle will work especially if you have axle needle roller bearing trouble.
Ebay.fr is a good source for parts and if you use the correct terminology you will succeed. Many parts are still available from motor factors and are reasonably priced. Watch out for advertised non runner automatics as they usually have low mileage and are good doners.
Body panels are still available and cheap.

Things to watch out for are:
Gearbox selector shaft seal. If your 9/11 is early enough the shaft will drop out completely.
Light switch contacts fail on dip / main changeover.
Door hinge pins on early models, hinge pin kits on later models.
    Drivers seat base / frame.
Master cylinder (brake fade).. because its Right hand drive to much heat.
Clutch cable will break. Because its right hand drive. (needs pedal & cable modification kit)
Clutch fork anchor pivot point stretching. Symptom is hard to select gear.
Overall the 9/11 were good reliable models. The 9 was the vehicle that changed Renault design forever.
Oohh! forgot to mention I have an '86 R9 Louisiane in my collection of Renault's.
    Hope this helps you.

Renault make cars that make sense!

This is the kind of info that makes these kinds of forums great:D:Dwhere else would you find that kind of stuff out!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 99 ✭✭breanoh

Hey there Renotech! Great to hear from you!
Thankfully, I have a great deal of info on the 9/11 range, as that is all my parents drove up until the late 90's, and they were the cars I learned to repair! I have used parts from 19's and 5's already, but thankfully the 9 and 11 I have are both low mileage examples, so don't require much work, it's just taking time to get the parts in, and there have been some age related problems, rubber seals, petrol lines, brakes etc.
My 9 is an Auto, so thankfully there are no clutch cable or selector arm problems, (I remember them well from all the ones my parents drove, they went through clutch cables @ some rate!) My 11 is a left hand drive, and I'm hoping to convert it to rhd for ease of use.
If you hear of any non runner auto's, (in Ireland) I'd be interested..... and if you have any parts to spare or know where there are any scrapped I'd love to hear, I'm looking for a set of either GTS or Louisiane wheels at present, the GTS/Louisiane steering wheel, And a clock set with tachometer as I'm trying to have both my 9 and 11 at the same basic spec.
I was bidding on one of the 11 auto's on e-bay but lost it on the last day!
I did manage to find some 9's and an 11 in a breakers yard, thanks to a tipp off from one of the guys here, and got a load of parts from them. And barring any major mishaps I should see my own 9 back on the road this side of March!

No problem on the info gents.. anytime!
Just on brakes GSF in Dublin give a good price on 19 discs & hubs which fit the 9/11. I think they are Brembo and Bendix. Pull the catalogue from the UK site which is a pdf and add on 40% ish.. for exchange rate. (www.gsfcarparts.com)
The 9 auto is neat to drive. Keep that kick down cable adjusted and don't forget to change a/box oil well inside the 30k mark. The only downside I can remember about the autobox is that the ECU (computer) does not have a good reputation and it will eventualy give you problems. It shows up as a missing gear like.. 2nd (the solenoids don't work in the box)
The wheel rims that you desire are scarce but keep in mind the 19 TSE rims that really look well they have a kind of a wire look and blend in ok. As an alternate steering wheel the super 5 TR came with the same style or the 5 Turbo.
I have to scratch my head again on the subject of dash clocks but I seem to recall the 18 GTS / GTL / GTA and diesel with the same cluster. Also the MK2 espace J635 (i think). Of course the 5/9/11 turbo stuff will fit in nicely. Oohh! flash back they are Jaeger units. Lots of variety.
I'll do some poking around and if I come up with something I'll let you know.

Later I'll post some web links to parts and information for the 9/11 which you may find usefull.
    R.

Not sure if the info is any use to anyone, but there is an abandoned Renault 11 in Carrigtouhill, outside Cork. It shares a yard with what I think is a 120Y and a few Grannys.

It is just across from the Costcutter shop in the middle of the village if anyone cares to look.

Thanks a million guys, great to get all the feedback!
I never realised the problem with the autobox! I'll keep an eye on it! ha ha! I think I have possibly found the GTS wheels I was looking for, one of my dads friends thinks he still has the set from our old GTS. fingers crossed!
I'll post some pics of the nine when her finished,
I'm not sure about the 5 gt parts, as I ahve all the Louisiane and broadway spec parts for the 9, and I want to have the exact same spec on the 11, as they are both the exact same (ie silver '86 model broadways) :)

How about this one:DIts been crushed since...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 99 ✭✭breanoh

oh dear god! that's just traumatised me! :P ha ha!
Well, I have made some more progress with my own 9, after nearly having a heart attack over the auto 'box.... I overhauled the carb, and cleaned out the fuel tank, and all the lines etc, and when I put it all back together we took her for a drive.... after engaging drive the transmission fault light came on and my dad decided to keep driving, the box waited till 3,500 rpm to change gear and only went into 2nd, wouldn't go into 3rd :O:O..... After getting her home I had a look at the box and the rest of the stuff, and to my relief discovered that it was my fault :D... I had put the kick down sensor in wrong, and instead of having the pin in front of the throttle linkage, I had it behind, so it wasn't working at all..... other than that, she's running fine now, just needs a new exhaust, although I do personally love the sound of her unsilenced..... :?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

    Post a pic!!:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 114 ✭✭Renotec

Sorry!! I have to laugh. I've seen the kick down problem many a time before especially after cleaning the carb. Bet you won't forget that again!
OOHH! also what a shame about that Burgundy 9TL in the pic above. Did you know that was the most popular colour on the 9 in Ireland.

Like Carchaeologist said a pic would be nice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

Really, there was quite alot around in that colour back in the day alright, the one in the pic had been in a field for ages with its windows broken, the interior was rotten and there didnt seem to be very much salvageable on it, not even number plates to add to the collection:)Twas only crushed a month or so ago.:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 114 ✭✭Renotec

I hate to see cars crushed like this one especially Renaults. There is little chance now days in saving them from the crusher especially with the mobile units. I wonder how many are left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

Yes, the mobile units are hungry, and there isnt much interest in older cars in these days of lots of money...

Yea, I'm finally making progress, thank god, She's driving at least.... And to think we drove her on a main road in that state last week... ha ha, well, I'm getting ready to put the new bumper on asap, and then I just have to sand the few patches of rust and sort them all out.....
    A bit more to do!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

It wouldnt be fun if we had nothing to do to them!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

Theres a guy that has a scrapyard in tournafulla near abbeyfeale, he had an 84LK 2door renault11 there last year, he said it was too good to scrap, havent been back since so i dont know what became of it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 114 ✭✭Renotec

NIce job on the Renault Breanoh! It doesn't look as if you have much to do. Summer is coming and the road is calling.

PS: Watch that R11 it could have been a van. Lots of that going on in the 80's. Excluding the 11 Turbo I can't recall Renault ever importing a 2dr 11 except for car/vans.

How about this. Any good to anyone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 114 ✭✭Renotec

Looks good and dry stored. Isn't it amazing how this stuff is still out there. This reminds me of the time I put a new factory shell on a R5 Turbo. Great fun!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 99 ✭✭breanoh

WOW! But looking at the costs etc, it'd cost a fortune to get it brought to Ireland, never mind the fact that I don't really actually need a shell..... but I could have a lot of fun building that into a complete car....... :)
I also have found out that apparently, they are still making 9's and you can buy one brand new over in Turkey!

It did look like an original car, had matching seats and all,the fact it was an english import might make a difference though? If it was an original 2dr it would be quite rare wouldnt it though, and worth keeping....

That new shell looks great,it would be nice to just have a a museum piece, though it would be a perfect base for a concours car, now that would be unusual!!:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 99 ✭✭breanoh

Ok, here's a quick update on her! And some more pics! I have finally banished the rust!!! I ended up using a (small) angle grinder :D
Also fitted the louisiane steering wheel, and I think I may have finally found a set of GTS alloys!

ps. She has been primered since the pics were taken.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 114 ✭✭Renotec

    Nice going!
Watch out for that tin worm. It has a habit of coming back!

Yea, I know, I'm filling the rust for the moment.... I've a second hand (rust free) bonnet, and a second hand back door for her, but I don't have the money to get her sprayed yet, I also have two rust free front wings, but I'm once more waiting 'till I have the money to get the job done properly. Because of the pinstriping, and broadway stickers on the body, it's gonna cost a bit to get the new panels done. I'm just getting her alot more presentable for the moment. I've pretty much taken all the removable panels off a good one I found, so I have replacements....... I've a new exhaust and rear suspension ordered, waiting for it to come in at the moment.....

    Hi folks,

Clearing out the garage and found a dismantled R5 motor. R1222 series 956cc from a MK1 R5 TL. Plus a spare crank, pistons, flywheel, some new gaskets, TS wheel, etc. Shame to throw it in the skip. Anyone care to give it a good home?
