Can anyone help me, I am looking for a way to improve the quality of sound that I get from playing MIDI files. I have various music softwares, including audacity and an old version of Adobe Audition 1.5, and these are great programs for working with real music, but I'm wondering if there are perhaps some programs that come with samples or something, and that I can play midi files in these, get realistic sounding results, and export it as an mp3 or whatever, for editing in audacity.

    Is this possible?

    Audacity doesn't support midi unfortunately.

What you need is a DAW and some VST instruments or external midi instruments.

You will then be able to import the midi file and split it into its different tracks (instruments) and play each track through an appropriate VST or instrument. The result can then be recorded as a wave/mp3, which could be used in audacity, but most DAWs will have better functionality for working with audio anyway so you might be able to ditch audacity.

If you are a mac user, garage band will do all of the above. Otherwise, you may have to make an investment. I'm not really sure what sort of DAWs are available free tbh. There's loads of free VST instruments out there though.

/edit: you may be able to do all this in Adobe Audition. I just read it has VST instrument support. Look for an option to import a midi file.

MIDI output will also depend on the capabilities of your sound card.
If you've only got a crappy "integrated sound card" on your motherboard, it ain't going to compare well to a decent sound card eg. Sound Blaster Audigy 4.

The thing is, I can import midi to Audition but it just sounds the same. But all that's really helpful, I'm looking for some freeware VST packages at the moment, though I think I might need a new sound card.
What about this midi DLS thing, has anyone any idea?
