hitting the interior west of the United States in August is a big gamble, i would recommend death valley but no doubt temperatures will be well around 50 celsius at that time, death valley record is 55 celsius btw

las vegas will also be very hot then but at least there is plenty of shelter there.

I would recommend the national parks of Bryce Canyon, Zion, Arches, Canyonlands and Capitol Reef all in southern Utah a few hours drive west/northwest from las vegas, again these will all be very hot in august. Moah is the best place to stay if you want to explore the wonderful surroundings of southern utah, northern arizona

las vegas has loads of scenery within a few minutes drive of the strip e.g. lake mead (hoover dam), valley of fire, red rock canyon and 12,000 foot Mount Charleston where there can be snow on the summit when its hitting 48 celcius on the las vegas strip

I was planning on doing the same last year, but the planning just got the better of me! There was far too much for me to try figure out so instead we went..

Flew to LA, spending 3 days there
Flew to Mexico, spending 10 days there
Flew to Las Vegas, spending 3 days there

Only an idea incase your planning doesn't go to as intended!!!!

My advice would be to spend more time in Vegas and less in San Diego - there is a lot more to see & do in Vegas.

On my first trip to the West Coast years ago I spent 5 nights in SD and only 3 in Vegas and I regretted it very much.

Keep your wits around you in Tijuana. Renowned rip off spot. Bring single dollar bills with you, a lot of people experts are switching so you give them a 20 and they say you only gave them a dollar and show you the switched notes.

Yosemite, Monterey, Carmel, the Del Monte plantation are all great.

The whole Southern Utah / Northern Arizona area is fantastic. Monument Valley is certainly worth driving through, Sedona fantastic. Grand Canyon is a must do. However if you can at all give yourself a few days there and hike down as far as you can. If you need any more information let me know and I'll tell you what I can.
