Your landlord sounds as if he/she is dodging tax.

Your choice, you can negotiate your rent downwards in return for not claiming rent relief or go ahead and do claim it.
He/she will lose either way with glut of rental properties out there, you have plenty of choice to move if needs be.

It's not a landlords market out there, drive a hard bargain!

I paid cash for my rent for several years and claimed rent relief. There was no issue. You should have a rent book to show to Revenue if they ever ask for verification. If your landlord won't give you one, you have more problems than rent relief.

BTW, according to people I know who've recently been looking for accommodation, it is a landlord's market out there.

Payment by cash is a matter of convenience and agreement. Claim away, he can't stop you.

    Exactly.

Also report him quietly about possibly dodging tax.

Why would he do that when there's no proof is landlord is evading tax?

Because they can easily check if he's paying it or not and punish him if he is?

Just because he insists on payment in cash, doesn't mean he's dodging tax.

    More likely of course.

Anyway, check www.prtb.ie and find the list of houses registered with them in your county. If he's not registered with them, he's definitely hiding.

It's a landlord's market where properties are competitively priced, but the jokers looking for 1500 per month for a one bed in spencer dock aren't being troubled by prospective tennants...

What the landlord does with his money is none of the OP's concern. What if he's paying his taxes? What if he's not paying his taxes and the landlord will have to sell the property in order to fund his tax bill? Say nothing OP.

IMO that is akin to supporting tax evasion, and morally wrong. You do not need you landlord's PPS number to claim tax relief. You'd be a fool for not claiming. His tax compliance has nothing to do with your ability to claim rent relief.
