When I try to open it it comes up with the "this program needs permission" text box. Then when I click continue it jst closes. I tried it from the command line to see if it gave any explanatory text but it just closes.

    Anyone have any idea why?

    Thanks

edit: It is working in the background

there is a way of setting up a short cut to the real administrator command line - if that makes any sense

    anyone know it ?

    I don't know.

Opening command line as admin then typing defrag c: gives more info (fragmentation percentage etc) than just running the defrag program I found out the other day.

Doesn't fix your problem but I found Autologics Disk Defragger to be most excellent as a replacement and it's free.

Thanks but it's working fine, just in the background. I edited the original post to indicate this, but possibly it wasn't clear.

Vista UAC can be dodgey that way - in extreme cases ive noticed having to wait up to 5-10 minutes after launching a shortcut/installer/etc. of no activity, that vista will then finally prompt for admin access.

Vistas inbuilt defragger is a joke anyway and I have never used it once in my system's history - always been using 3rd party trial software like Diskkeeper and PerfectDisk.

the above link is good as its 100% free but the trial software ive mentioned has great features - like being able to defrag the MFT and such.
