The Organized Crime Unit is to become a permanent unit, this move has to be welcomed.
The Garda Commissioner has announced his intention to establish a full-time specialist unit to deal with gangland crime.

Fachtna Murphy was speaking at his first garda graduation ceremony in Templemore since becoming commissioner.

The Organised Crime Unit, which was set up on a temporary basis in November 2005, is being established on a permanent basis due to it's success to date.

It will have 70 members and will be dedicated to targeting gun crime, organised crime and drug trafficking.

The unit will be led by Detective Superintendent Dominic Hayes and will be under the control of Detective Chief Superintendent Noel White.

    About time!

Will the Unit still be attached to NBCI?

That's great news. Any Gardai here interested in joining the unit? Would you have to be a detective or somethin to get in?

The OCU has been around for years... Yeah you would need extensive experience of working in that area, i believe they take people from all areas DDU CPU SDU but especially people who have good return of work in criminal gang related stuff and display an interest...

Very glad to hear the unit is gonna be permanent. Wonder if they will operate something similar to Tango squad when they constantly followed crooks overtly.I would love to do that. Also where will the unit be based? In Dublin or around the country?

I wonder if the Gardai would 'get away' with such a tactic nowadays, what with the Ombudsman & the litigous culture out there :(

I would love to see the Tango Squad back.

Problem is, with the increased risk to Gardai these days, would they get any Gardai to actually do it?

Didn't Tango Squad were balaclava's/ski masks to cover their identity?

I remember reading in 'Crime Lords',by Paul Williams, about how the Tango Squad used walk everywhere w/ Martin Cahill. One particular incident which had me in stitches, involved one Tango Sqd Garda slagging Cahill.I can't remeber the exact words but the Gda. said that Cahill's dogs puppies looked very like Cahill, implying Cahill was the daddy! If I,or anyone else, find the quote.. post it up!

The line from the movie 'the General' (dunno if it's factual or not) was good:

Garda: Which sister are ya roidin tonight Cahill? Both?
    Cahill: Yores!

    :D
