Laptop Problem

Ok so my laptop took a tumble of about 10 inches onto carpet & now its not working.

It starts up ok but it only goes as far as the Windows XP loading page & won't go any further.

I ran the diagnostics on it and everything passes except for the following:

    Start DST Short Test
    Test results: Fail
    Error Code: 1000--146
Msg:Unit 0: IDE status failed. Status Byte = 64 ControlCode = 1 Msg = No additional sense information

Have no idea what that means but I'm hoping its something I could maybe sort out myself before I have to take it for repair.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers!

Sounds like your hard drive is fubbar'ed or on the way out.
If the laptop was on when it fell the hard drive may have been irrepairably damaged but theres hope for your files yet. But it does sound like new hard drive time.

Depending on the make of laptop, sometimes the pins at the end of the hdd can dislodge from the socket if it gets a knock, It might be worth removing the hard drive and inspect the pins and push it firmly back into its place.

Try re inserting the hard drive as suggested failing that you might have to get a new one, the hard disk could have just got too much of impact from that fall :(. You could also download the hard disk manufacturers diagnostic utility and boot off it test the hard disk to ensure its kaput

Given the error message, I'm pretty sure it's time to start shopping for a new hard drive. If there is data on the hard drive that you need then I would advise to stop using it immediately. It's not dead yet but it's close. If it dies then you won't get any data off it without spending hundreds of euro.
