India during summer

    Hey,

I'm just wondering what India get's like during the summer?

I am hoping to fly out there around the first week of June and return at the end of August. The only thing which has stopped me from booking the flights so far is the thought of the monsoon season.

I mean, if I am there from June through the end of August, is it possible to avoid the worst of the rain or will I have to put up with it?

Think it depends on wheer in India. The further North/East, the less likely you'll hae to put up with it.

You may avoid the worst of it if you avoid June/Early July.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I spent the summers of 2005 and 2006 in Shillong (doesnt get much northeastern than that) and we had monsoon there. Nothing crazy, just an hour or so of rain most days.
Also Kolkata (aka Calcutta) would also be considered North East and the monsoon is hell there! I missed it both times by leaving the city by the second week of June but it can come earlier. But my friends who stayed behind were wading in water (not fresh water by any means).
I was in Delhi in June and August, both times the heat was near 50 degrees but no rain.

    Whereabouts you planning on going?

    Thanks for the replies.

I'm planning to fly into Delhi and then travel around a bit going Kashmir-Nepal-Kolkata-Bangladesh-Bangalore-Sri Lanka-Goa-Mumbai-Pakistan-Delhi-Dublin. Or something like that. The train system seems ok. I'll hopefully have 12 weeks so will have time to see a lot of the country.

So basically if I avoid the South and West, and the East!, until July I should be ok?! Because I could easily spend the month of June in Nepal, it looks so nice! I wouldn't mind missing out on visiting Goa/Pakistan/The West if that's what it takes to avoid the rain!

I went in aug last year and there wasno rain in rajasthan but in goa and kerala it rained nearly everyday. dont let it pu you off though, the south is beautiful!

the north east definately seemed to have been hit the worst.

oh, and the trains are fantastic!

Ya, well the north east has a place called Cherapunjii that is supposedly the wettest place in the world! But you can be lucky or unlucky. The rainy season was completely different the two summers I was there. Apparently it goes in cycles, good year bad year good year etc.

    Oh, and trip sounds fantastic!

Ok, so it sounds like I won't be able to avoid the rain wherever I go! Flights seem pretty reasonable at around €600 to go from the first week in June until the end of August.

Really really really close to booking them right now because at least then I'll have something definite to work from but I have to break the news to the girlfriend first. Which will be kinda awkward seen as I'm away in Vancouver for 4 months at the moment!

So yeah.....might be a question of girlfriend or India. Tough one. She definitely won't go for 3 months. Maybe she'll join me for 1. :p

Will keep ye all informed of my travel plans if I do indeed go!
