    Hey

Is it possible to get a compact camera that allows you to change the shutter speed? or do macro? I bought a finepix s7000 a while back and like some of the features on it but don't use it cause its so bulky... does buying a smaller camera mean you are stuck with auto photos?

    Thanks.

Yep no problem most of them have a shutter priority aperture priority on them

on canons its called Tv for shutter proirity my canon a620 has it and it also has an ok macro setting my mother has a super compact(fits in a shirt pocket) and that has it too but I'm not too sure about the macro on that.

Before you buy , check out the cameras features , make sure it has a usable manual mode , lots of compacts do , but some are limited in how far it actually goes ,

www.dpreview.com is a good site that lists all camera features.

Agreed with all above , and the canon powershots are excellent compacts
for manual settings, including shutter speeds.

The powershots are a good midway step to an SLR...

Yeah, Canon powershot are very good. I used one (still have it) for a few years before eventually buying a Canon SLR, and some of the pics from the powershot (A80) are the best that I've taken. The manual setting on them are very good and it made the transition to SLR a lot easier for me anyway.

I think strictly speaking powershot is a bridge camera as opposed a compact.
Explains some of the higher spec features

A bridge camera would have more "features" than a powershot - see the Canon G series and Nikon P the various Panasonic, Sony, Olympus and Fuji bridge models...

I think that the powershot is the best compact for creative uses, fuji f31fd best for low-light and maybe a mention for the Panasonic camera that has 28-280mm zoom in a compact size.

I blame camera companies for their similar naming.

    When Jackdaw said

I was thinking of a Sony Cybershot with extra features, which is a bridge camera.
If I had of been paying attention I would of seen that he had previously said canon powershot.

Well lens abbreviations are just as bad - check out my *takes deep breath*
    Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX VR Nikkor
(and this is one of the cheapest consumer lenses out there!) ;)

I think they should do a degree course in photography abbreviations. You'd get a BSht after your name :)
