cooking rabbits??

    Hi All,

    I dont hunt very often, so have very little experience cooking rabbits and I'd appericate your suggestions for it. I was told recently to stuff the rabbit with sausages and cover in rashers and roast, anyone tried this?

    Another man suggested cider but he was..well...well oiled and wasnt making much sence.

    Any suggestions are appericated.

    Tried and tested, Rabbit stew.
    Whole rabbit with your favourite veggies.
    Cook as stew or casserole

    If your preference is fried rabbit, then this is how to prepare it.
    Put the rabbit in a large boiling pan with an onion and carrots, cover with water and boil until tender. The rabbit can be tested periodically with a pointed knife. The meat can then be removed, placed on a plate and allowed to cool. The water, complete with onions and carrots, can be discarded, or incorporated into other dishes.
    Once cold the rabbit can be given any coating you like from bread crumbs to southern fried chicken style coating. The meat is low in fat and if you use a healthy oil such as olive oil to carry out the frying the only thing you have to watch is calories - rabbit and skinned chicken have approximately the same calorific value.

    Just for comfort of handling cut it up in shoulders, back and hindquarters. A heavy kitchen knife or little cleaver will do the job. After that the possibilities are fairly endless. Stew, fried, oven roasted ( plenty of basting needed ). Bon Appetit.

    P.S. Don't throw away the livers, they're gorgeous.

    i cook them in a pot in a tin of cider with veg and a tad bit of garlic. try it llads, im gettin hungry just thinking of it!

    Yeah, but I onlt go out during the Nov-Jan season, it I come accross a rabbit well and good, but there are few so no point going out solely for them.
    I'm a shottie not a rifler, :(

    Ah, shottie will do the job with suitable shot at a suitable range without ruining the meat. Plenty of rabbits in these parts anyway. Seem to be very dense concentrations of them about the place rather than a broad scattering across the country.

    I find that you'll rarely get close enough to ruin the meat with a ahottie, here at least.
    But numbers are so low that it is pointless going out for them alone. I seen one this year in range, but is was acting strange. Thought it might have mixie, so either way we had to shoot it and sure enough it was in a bad way with mixie.

    Try roasting one over a BBQ, covered in oils & herbs etc dished up after with a salad. Stunning...........

    That's it lads. I'm taking out the rifle and putting on the wellies. Tomorrow's dinner is rabbit.

    I was a traditonal strew man until recently and my friend cooked this def recommend it. I am off to bed now up early in the morning try and find a bunny for dinner tomorrow night.
