Thought about getting the latest Toast, and went to the Roxio site, where it was advertised at $79.99. OK, I thought; $80 is about €50.

But when you go to buy it, it turns out that the price is actually €100 (less a cent), and there's a $20 "rebate" - for those who already own an earlier version.

Roxio also charges VAT to European customers, on top of this. Not that I mind this - I just can't stand it when companies put one price sticker on something, and then it turns out to be 50% dearer.

You could always buy it on the Apple site. It's shy of a 100 quid.

Just had a look at the Roxio site, Ireland doesn't charge Vat on downloads so that 15% tax doesn't count - there's a list of countries effected on the site. Also if you avail of the mail in rebate it will cost you 79 euro. Still doesn't excuse this practice I know but it's not as bad as maybe you thought.

    €100 is probably the same as Roxio's $99 + "VAT @ 17%", though!

The mail-in rebate *only applies if you have an earlier version*!

    Someone here

    http://www.macupdate.com/reviews.php?id=6351

says Toast will no longer copy CDs in this incarnation. Is this correct?

(Amazon.co.uk have it for £50, which is about €67, by the way.)

It's copied anything I've thrown at it so far - bar commercial dvds of course.

Bar commercial DVDs? Now, that surprises me, because it claims it'll save down a 9GB DVD to a 4.7GB DVD blank on its propaganda. Oh, but not if they're copy-protected DVDs, you mean?

That's it. If you rip the dvd down to a Video-TS folder then it will copy it.

Apparently Popcorn (which I've just recently bought, curses) is now integrated into Toast.

No, Jam is integrated into Toast. Popcorn is still a separate product.

Is Toast really that much better than the freeware alternatives?

Toast Titanium 6, the best way to get around all the little things other burners stop you from doing!! But no longer available, only to those who refuse to upgrade in the "knowledge" of what would be lost
