So, 'working from home' today, I decided to look through the stats on my Flickr account. There's a section called 'referring domains' that will show where requests for your photos have come from.

Who likes the background on this MySpace page?

    I do...

first things first.. turn off your all sizes option.

    Then, pursue your image thief.

Image is CC (not Copyright), so I guess the Myspace person is allowed use (assuming they credit you).

CC I don't mind, but, she hasn't even followed the CC guidelines

Like most MySpace pages - that one looks hideous.

Not the fault of your pic of course!

Just edit your photo (using Piknik on FlickR) and that will resolve the issue. :D

I get around thiefing by only having lo-res versions of photos online and activating full copyright. Then you can't download photos. It's annoying to have photos thiefed.

Is that the very-edge-of-the-picture control click trick? Yeah, works on Mac dunno about other platforms.

The updated version of your picture doesn't appear on her site helios, she must have downloaded it and used a copy.

Yeah seems like it... I checked the source and it seems to be coming directly from Flickr. MySpace seems to have a specific email address for copyright thieves anyways, may give them a shout.

It might be cached in the myspace server, so give it 24hrs and see. :D

It does look like it's coming directly from your FlickR account.

A bit Off Topic but I found out I came top of google's good shag list.

    Hooray for me!.

On Topic again, I'd suggest you limit the all sizes to Friends and Family, that way you know who to clatter if someone nicks one of your pics.

Just a point for people to consider - Activating low-res may prevent commercial use due to the resulting quality issues but low res images may still be useful for a web page to someone. Even someone taking a screen grab may yield something of use if cropped in photoshop.

Heres a *neat* trick that I think people should be aware with flickr and most (nearly all i think) other web pages that a very useful feature of firefox (no ie equivalent) is a thing called page info. Go to any flickr page with a 'protected image' -> right click your mouse on a blank bit -> select page info -> go to media tab -> scroll through the list of media with helpful previews to show you the content of what you are looking at -> when you find the ditty you are trying to rob/copy/acquire by ill gotten means; click save as.

But even "View Page Source" in all browsers exposes the locations of the web page treasures - like your images which then becomes quite downloadable. One trick that page designers will do is to complicate the readable source to 'hide' the relevant code - but in essence they are all in there and available to you if you have the patience to extract them.

Firefox rocks - don't blame the tool! The nature of the web however is that you are sending images and other media across the web and is cached locally and perfectly decipherable to any clever app that wants to take hold of it either locally in the cache or downloaded on line.

Flash sites may be marginally better in so far as they embed the images being displayed within the flash objects, but these can also be copied but a bit more difficult to work with if someone is trying to use the photos contained therein as jpg images.

Obviously this doesn't condone the behavior of someone who willfully plagiarises, but lets be realistic here - in practical terms (not right or wrong) - the web should be thought of as a mechanism through which your work will be 'shared' - after all; that is why we put our work on things like flickr. If someone chooses to abuse the privilege of viewing your work, then the web is a very poor enforcer of your rights as the creator of the work. I guess it was never designed that way.

So be warned and careful about where you store your treasures.

Turns out the plot is thickening... The photo is being used by a site that makes themes for MySpace. What's even more juicey is that I found that the photo is being hosted by Amazon's hosting service! They now receieved a nice little emailing saying that they're hosting a copyrighted work without the owners permissions or knowledge, and that I'm seeking 'compensation'....

Kind of on topic/ kind of off topic but have a look at this photo on Flickr. The whole area of infringment of copyright seems to be really coming to the fore recently. Guess it goes hand in hand with the proliferation of DSLRs and online photo hosting!
