ok guys it being almost a year the ps3 was released in Europe (over a year in America)

does any1 like me feel that Sony hasn’t quiet made any impact or progress since its release.

xbox360 & wii are taking the market by storm, before all the fan boys start saying saying give it time, its been time enough. They have had more or less a year to get the finger out and show us that Sony have a future.

Sony are just moving way to slow.

Personally, i think the PS3 performed pretty well last year. The games that came out for it towards the middle and end of the year, made getting the PS3 an easier decision, especially with Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank.

These next few months are looking brilliant too with Prologue, MGS4, GTA4, Prototype, and HOME all arriving[hopefully].

So, in short, I agree it started slowly but it is still well-worth the investment.

Well its been out a yr in march and I agree that its been a slow year, but i've a feeling its gonna finally get off its feet and take off this year, some great games coming.Sales did pick up towards the end of year, but ive a feeling thats purely because sony was taking the 60gd model off the market and replacing it with a 40gd non backward compatible model :-/.

I think now is also a good time to get a PS3 - the future is looking bright for the first time since launch. I think price cut associated with 40gb model has contributed greatly to sales, as has the promise of games like GT5 & MGS4.

Also, Blu-ray is looking almost certain to crush hd-dvd - esp. since warner bros turned....

I only bought a ps3 in october ,the price drop made my decision

I'd say theres a good few tricks to be seen from sony still.

i think the biggest reason the sales picked up so much at the end of the year was the price drop. other contributing factors were the release of some quality games and the addition of Divx support (this was the clencher for me).

the xbox and wii were the big sellers of last year but i think things will change this year. Even around Christmas of last year the PS3 start outselling the wii.

They've made some progress... but they need to move quite quickly so as to cement it.

360 remains the definitive console for this generation, albeit one overly prone to failure.

I have difficulty seeing the WII as sharing the same market as the other two consoles.

They're definetely making progress, it's a typical new product development curve. Can anyone remember back to the PS1s first year? What'd they have, Wipeout? I honestly can't remember if a slow start was par for the course for Sony's other consoles...but these tech products usually follow an S curve. I imagine 08 will be a very good year for Sony.

Since buying my PS3 I've played through Motorstorm, Formula 1, Folklore, Heavenly Sword, DIRT, Ratchet & Clank, GRAW2, Uncharted, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, Super Stardust HD, Loco Roco, Assassin's Creed, Everyday Shooter, Calling All Cars, Warhawk and Call of Duty 4 on it, all of which are very good games. I've also played Resistance, Oblivion, Enchanted Arms and Sega Rally, none of which were quite so good. I've just picked up Burnout Paradise today.

I'd say that probably adds up to the best first year of games of any console I've ever owned from launch - far better than the 360 and Wii at least, and a lot better than I remember of the PS2. And 2008 looks like it will be fantastic.

I think Oblivion's the best game on the PS3.

PS3 outsold 360 in the last 3 months of last year. The numbers, as reported by each company were:

    360: 4.3m
    PS3: 4.9m
    Wii: 7.0m

So, they have got the finger out. They had a pretty amazing turnaround over the christmas period.

Software wise, the first year is often a system's worst, but I wouldn't say it was bad. 08 looks great.

Agreed, this year wasn't half as bad as everyone was saying. And I wouldn't even put the Wii in the same class as the PS and X Box. Roll on '08!

I know that most people will tell you that the 360's graphics are as good as ps3's but owning both myself i think the ps3's graphics are generally much crisper.I have a 32" lg(720p) but i can still notice a pretty substantial difference despite not having a 1080p tv.I think the ps3 will really take off this year.I know what the OP means about the ps3's underwhelming debut. There was no major hype or supply concerns etc....However the price drop in october came at just the right time and now plenty of ppl have ps3's rather than the truly dedicated folk. Now that plenty of ppl have them, a few excellent games would really help it.And another thing, the games need to geta bit cheaper aswell. i.e as cheap as 360 games.Blu- ray is almost certain to win the format war IMO and this should make producing ps3 games cheaper.I've also heard that the ps3 is going to gain in-game XMB at some stage this year.So that means the ability to chat during games and listen to music during games.

Mind me asking how each console is connected to your tv??

I also don't understand why PS3 games are more expensive than 360 ones. It's the same game and I think it's really unfair on Sony. It's not their fault, and if I was working for them, I'd be onto retailers explaining that if the prices weren't in line with 360 releases there would be repercussions!

I just checked 3 games there on Amazon and they all had the same prices for Xbox and PS3, bar one 50p difference. The shops themselves have obviously deicded ti rip of the PS3 crowd.

Now ask yourself this question...Did the 360 really perform so well in it's first year? I don't think so, and many owners experienced problems with there 360 consoles, compare them numbers to the people that have had problems with the ps3? And the fact is there was far more broken 360's in first year than there has from ps3...Most people that own ps3's want it for the blu-ray player as we all know it wouldn't be too good on it's first year or so...The PS3's blu-ray player is also updateable and blu-ray is the best format out there...Also the Wii is only selling alot because of the price and to be honest I think it's a gimmick and the only fun game for it is Wii Sports..

Wii sports is a demo in all fairness.

Madden is way better a game to play on Wii, Metroid is sublime, Zelda, Mario soccer for drunken fun, Mario Galaxy, Woods golf.

The Wii makes some games a hell of a lot more addicitve. I would not bother with getting Madden/Tiger Woods on the PS3 yet i have them on Wii

PS3's time will come, probably this year with some decent AAA titles, as the limits of the 360 are being probed by the likes of Burnout Paradise, the PS3 is just getting into it's stride.
Looking forward to seeing what the likes of the Ico team have in store for us.

Of course, MS are probably prepping the sucessor to the 360 as we speak, hmmm...

I originally bought a 360 about 15 months ago but last october when the ps3's price dropped, i traded in the 360 and got a 60gb ps3.I really enjoyed it for the first month until i started gettin frustrated with the steep prices and limited choice of games(driving games in particular). So b4 xmas i had a bit of spare cash so i got a another 360 premium.Luckily the new xbox had hdmi.So i connect both of them using hdmi. But the only reason i re-bought a 360 was because i'd realised that it would be another year for the ps3 to get into its stride. The 360 is fun at the mo but as better games continue to come on stream for ps3 i expect that to become my main console. The 360 as a machine cant even come close to the ps3.If its already at its graphical peak, it wont be long b4 the ps3 rules.Btw one of the reasons the ps3's games are dearer is because they have to be put on a bluray disk, which is a HD disk.360 games only have to be put on dvd's.The difference being that the 360 upscales its games to HD.The ps3 is "true HD" so to speak.

360 processes it's games at 720p, there is no upscaling needed for your 720p lg tv, so that's a moot point really. If you're referring to 1080p then please provide me with a link of the 1080p PS3 titles, because unless something has drastically changed, the vast majority of games are still 720p.

Also, about the pricing. Surely the MSRP is the same on both versions of any game, thus it's entirely down to the retailers greed and not the cost of bluray??

What an amazing post. Really an eye opener into how insidious This is living really is.
Ignoring the whole "graphical peak" stuff, which isnt based in technical reality, allow me to just clarify something.

-Blu-Ray is a medium, a format for holding data, like a harddrive, flash memory etc. So is DVD. Content can be any resolution (SD, ED, HD) on any medium.

The Xbox can output natively in 720p (as per Burning Eclipse's post). For the record I have both too but I pity the kid that spent €600 on the PS3, after so long and so much talk (hype), the content still isnt here.

    ROFL

I think this issue is just semantics. True hd, 1080p, upscaling, native resolution... all that jazz... Either way, zonda comes across as being a bigger fan of 360 in any posts of his I've seen, so the confusion is even more... confusing??

Nah its worth it, so is the psp its selling by the bucket load now.

The ps3 is just too tempting, It has all them juicy exclusives coming out, plus most of the good games on the 360. There might be small glitches playing games designed with the 360 in mind, but they are small, and on the better games they do a good job of getting rid of them.

Now you have to ask yourself, has Microsoft actually taken any of the core market of the playstation away from sony?

Its thought up to 50% of ps2 owners never gamed online on any console, what has the 360 offered them? Most of these people will jump onboard the ps3 when it comes out with metal gear/final fantasy/gran turisimo and it will just sky rocket.

Even EA thinks the ps3 is gonna outsell the 360 this year by the ton.

All in all, its just about the right time to buy..

    I am biased though...

The whole "graphical peak" thing is a bit ridiculous I think.

As long as both machines are pretty decent spec wise, for a developer then a lot of it comes down to their technical architectures, the real nitty gritty of how they operate.

Also it's important what kind of development tools MS and Sony have for the devs.

But the most important thing I reckon is the developers themselves, a talented dev team will make either machine shine, pushing it hard. Look at what some devs can do with the PS2 for example, games like God of War 2 look pretty decent on such an old machine.

Be interesting to see how things pan out. I have a 360 which I'm delighted with, fantastic machine. I also have a Wii, which is a bit disapointing, than again I did buy it mind for just the exclusive, mainly first party titles.

The PS3? I have had a PS1 and PS2, maybe Sony will make a good year of 2008. The only thing that annoys me is the fact they removed backwards compatability, the cheap b@stards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 233 ✭✭prodigal_son

I agree the games on the ps2 started out, and how they ended up, pinching every last bit of power out of it, its amazing how far they can push things.

Killzone, looked amazing for such an old machine, might not be everyones cup of tea as a game, but as a technical achievement it was top notch.

They ran out of ram and every resource so finally started to stream real time content from the disc. Pretty much using everything it has to offer.

Apply the same logic to the ps3, as i see no reason why not to, and graphical peak looses all sense of meaning within each generation, never mind next generations.

The main thing is they pump out more fun games like Uncharted, and pump out some of them big names we all know will be great.
