Hi all, was wondering what protein drinks you use for weight lifting ? I've been using Maximuscle Cyclone myself for a few months and found it good but thinking of trying Promax mainly cos it hasn't got creatine in it and it has less calories than Cyclone.

So who thinks what about these drinks, are they any good or are there any better ones that you know of on the market ?

Maybe it's just the cheapskate in me but I'd always say to just buy whey/creatine etc in bulk and save a fortune in the process. If you just want to increase your protien intake and throw it in to a PWO shake then just get some bulk whey from somewhere like www.bulkpowders.co.uk. You can get creatine and carbs there too. No point in paying over the odds for the maximuscle branding IMO.

Thanks for the link, that's what was putting me off Cyclone, it does work but you really do pay for it so was wondering if u could get something cheaper. I was thinking of avoiding creatine cos of the health scares i've heard about it and it is banned in France, methinks there must be a good reason for that ? So i was thinking of just getting a protein powder. Will check out that site thanks.

Just had a quick look at that site and i was thinking of trying the Whey Protein Concentrate 80%, works out nearly half the price of maximuscle promax or progain !!!

Creatine is banned in France becuase they're idiots. Simple as.

Anyone who was listening to Spin today will attest to the fact the majority of people don't have the slighest fcuking clue what's going on with creatine usage and how it effects the body.

Really the ignorance is just unbelievable, you can maybe understand it with steroids where there is a definate risk if you don't know what you're doing, but thinking creatine can kill you is just ridiculous.

USN mass fuel is my favourite and best tasting. But the nutrition x vanilla flavour ain't too bad either, it mixes quite well as well and probably the best value of all the other protein shakes.

I got mine there, unflavoured and like it. I mix with skim milk and tesco strawberry milkshake mix. Also pour some on oats and cold milk. Or mix in with oats and water/milk and maybe an egg and liquidise and make pancakes. Goes well with pineapple juice for a PWO drink.

Being unflavoured gives you many options. I even mix with sugar free jelly, and whisk up to make mousse.

Really am tempted to try this stuff, i assume u do see results with it ? Would u say it gets better results than maximuscle ?

That strawberry milkshake mix, is that a powder or what ? What would it be beside in tesco ?

Man, protein is protein. Switching brands really isn't gonna make that much of a difference. If any. The amount of cash in your wallet will probably be the only difference.

I can't say, I have only ever had this stuff. Even if I had maximuscle there is no real way of telling which is better. I would not stop taking it just to see if it worked, and do not track gains or anything to see if it increases performance. Your training routine matters a hell of a lot more.

As Hanley said, protein is protein. Yeah, one might have some very slight edge over another, so eat more of the "bad" one ;)

I just treat it like any old food, it would be like asking if switching to O'Kane chicken fillets gave me better performance than Moy Park ones.

The milkshake powder is sometimes in 2 places in my tescos, one is near the tinned fruit, jellies & custard. Then sometimes it is near the coffee, cocoa, hot chocolates. Bulk powders also do flavourings, I like separating the 2 so I can add as much or little as I want. I think I have seen similar powders in aldi or lidl. There is also a nestle one that is nice, nesquik.

Whey is also great in smoothies, thickens it up nicely.

Ok thanks for your guys, just ordered 5kg of protein and 500g of creatine, will see how i get on with this new "cheap" stuff, can feel my credit card already thanking me ! ;)

That whey protein at the BulkPowders place is dramatically cheaper than the whey protein at Holland and Barrett.

Perhaps better to get it at Holland and Barrett. Bulkpowders could be of poor quality.

Hahaha that's brilliant!! The reason the bulkpowder one is so cheap is because there's minimum overheads, no fancy packaging or advertising, and no fancy flavourings. Bulkpowders has a great name in the weight training community for continually providing good service and great products. They've been around a good while now. If their stuff was crap people would vote with their feet!

Ironically H & B is probably the worst quality stuff you're gonna pick up on the high street, alot of their stuff is just packed with low quality cheap sugar to bulk it up.

I might risk it for a biscuit. Should I be getting the Whey Protein Concentrate or the Isolate. I believe Isolate is the better option but more expensive.

The concentrate is 80%. Does that mean 80% protein? That sounds like it would do the trick at the cheaper price.

I went for the concentrate, it is 80% protein. I think the isolate might have more "absorbable protein" or something, so as I said before you could just eat a little more. I can't really remember but I read up about the differences, and the isolate did have the edge, but most said it was not worth the extra money, unless you are a really serious athelete.

As for the price Hanley is right. Ipods are overpriced due to marketing costs. Budweiser is low quality crap that costs so much since you are paying for ads. If you want to equate quality with price it is generally best to do it with a single store, or similar brands, e.g. compare bulkpowders 80% to the 70% protein. Then some stuff just costs more due to processing/manufacturing costs, and economy of scales, while not necessarily that much better to the average punter, so weigh up the value yourself. e.g. a 5kg bike might cost €2,000 than a 6kg bike. Important to Lance Armstrong, but not some lad cycling to work.

Body Fortress - Muscle and Weight Gainer - Vanilla Flavour
Love that stuff, and cheap enough to boot.

    The morning and post-workout shake.

    3-4 scoops of the powder
    8-10 oz milk
    1 large banana
    3-4 scoops of yogurt
    flax-seed oil
    ice
    *blend*

I use BSN's Syntha 6, it certainly does the job for me. Prior to that I used to use Reflex Nutrition's Instant Whey again it was good, but I prefer the BSN stuff.

Do these drinks have much sugar? I am on a high protein diet for health reason but have to be careful re sugar intake. I want a way to have a high protein drink/shake as a 'snack'

    Thanks

I take ON Whey Protein and love it, taste isn't the best but I'm on a low-carb/calorie diet so it's about as good as they come!

Taste wise, USN is definitely the best I've found, I'd actually drink it as a beverage rather than a supplement!

Is it just me or is that Bulkpowders crowd a bit slow with their delivery ? Nearly a week later and still not a dicky bird, or am i just being too impatient ?

I had to wait a while with them before but it turned out to be the fault of the courier(parcelforce i think). You can go to thier site and track your order, you'll probably find its sitting in the back of some bloke's van.

    Howdy,

I've been using RAM for a while now but my supplies are running low. RAM is nice - tastes great. Orange and Strawberry. As Hanley said in another thread - it reduces the muscle pain the day after a heavy weights session. Costly stuff though. THinking of going with the 80% concentrate protein mentioned above. Any other ideas as regards serving suggestions?
I use gym at work and mix my RAM shake afterwards at my desk (keep a tub under my desk). Minumum hassle is important so that works well. I don't want to bring anything in every morning (I know I'll forget) so fresh produce and dairy is out. I guess the ideal is a powder to mix with the protein and water to make it taste nice? Any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Gumby.

After a workout have it with water,if you're having it before you got to bed have it with milk.Unless you wanna get up in the middel of the nightto pee,mix it with as little as you can to make it easily drinkable,ie a half-pint instead of a pint.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,495 ✭✭✭Zorba

Great thanks for your help, tried it earlier with water, think i'll need to get some milkshake powder or something to make it a bit nicer, it's not exactly yum yum !!

I'd go without the milk to be honest and use peanut butter or down a tbsp of olive oil to slow the digestion. milk is not that great for you.

The lads were talking about protein there. Most will mix the creatine with some simple carbs like grape juice or apple juice.

I put unflavoured protein in a blender with pineapple juice or pineapple chunks for a PWO smoothie. I also sprinkle it on oats and milk for breakfast.

I wouldnt put creatine in my protein shakes, just too grainy for my liking, it is like sand or something.

I never heard of olive oil slowing absorption before, I did hear about the milk though. Some buy (expensive) casein protein for this purpose- protein absorption during the night, but mixing whey with milk produces a similar enough effect, and cheaper. Also you only need one type of protein so save again due to bulk buying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,972 ✭✭✭joepenguin

    that bulkorders deal sounds good.

as for brands, go with one that has a good reputation and not too expensive.
Big whey from nutrition x is great value and tastes great.
    Optimum gold is also good.
havent had dymatize elite in ages, found it good and tasted ok, good value.

as was mentioned before, protein is protein for the most part, just go with a reputable brand which does not really mean the most expensive, and the results will not differ from one to the next

Christ on a bike..you'd mix unflavoured whey with peanut butter?Quite apart from the fact that it'd never be drinkable, how is peanut butter better for you than milk??

no id drink the whey and then down a tbsp of peanut butter. milk has a high sugar content. you dont need it at night time. peanut butter will not a have an effect on insulin levels. that is why it is better for you. it will also slow the absorbtion of the protein throughout the night.

    Why not just use casein?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 907 ✭✭✭AlphaMale 3OO

    Why not just use casein?

You should. Add healthy fats to that and there'll be a slow release of amino acids for 7 or 8 hours.

Milk will help slow the digestion too.

Ok thanks for all your help guys, tried the protein with milk tonight and it wasn't actually bad at all, or maybe i'm getting used to the taste of the protein.

Anyway a big thanks goes to Nibble for introducing me to bulkpowders, saved me a small fortune ! Worked out it's nearly a third of the price for the same weight in creatine and protein compared to the price i was forking out for maximuscle !
