New Nikon stuff

    Ah for feck sake :(

No D80 replacement yet then. No AF motor in this thing. The D60 just seems to be a D40x with dust reduction and some useless in-camera retouching stuff that nobody ever uses. Still no status LCD at the top, meaning you'll have to rely on the battery-draining colour LCD screen.
Makes no sense to me. The D40x is out less than a year, meanwhile the D80 is getting very long in the tooth and shat upon by the competition.

In one way I'm pleased... no AF motor in the body of this camera either...perhsaps Nikon is going to introduce an AFS nifty fifty soon?

Don't see any temptation for me to upgrade at all (good for my wallet).

But the 16-85VR seems interesting (the price does not :()

I wouldn't write off the "Active D-Lighting" feature of the D60 though - Canon and D300 have it as well and Ken Rockwell (I know) did give a pretty good demonstration of how it is somewhat effective at reducing clipping of highlights and shadow areas (but it's no S5 Pro)

16-85 looks nice. Any idea on price for this?

Other than that, very dissapointed. Was hoping for AF-S updates for other lens.

Lets not forget about this beauty:

Nikon announces the PC-E NIKKOR 24mm f/3.5D ED

Now that's more like it. Shame about the price :(

So its basically a D40x v1.01. Good for newcomers but nothing to make me want to upgrade except maybe the active D lighting.
Would that be any replacement for manual filters? Adjusting pixel sensitivity should perform the same job and would certainly be handier.

Maybe there is still a surpirse announcement of the D10 in the works...

    We can always hope.

Hmm...maybe with the introduction of the D60 they'll sell a battery grip that will fit the D40 too?

    One can always hope :)

I've seen unbranded grips for the D40 on ebay

I'm actually not interested in the extra battery life but the vertical shutter button and command dial.

None of the 3rd party battery grips offer the command dial and their version of the shutter is to use the infra-red setting (too much hassle to switch in most cases).

Unfortunately the D40/D40x doesn't have the contacts to allow a command dial or shutter release button on a vertical grip.

Nothing there to interest me I'm afraid. I've ordered a D300 there now though. :)
A D300 and the f/2.8 70-200mm VR so far this year! And it's only January! :(

I remember reading that too - but I also remember people saying there being some extra contacts in the compartment that apparently had no use...

    Wishful thinking then.
