Looking for a hotel in Tokyo for 2 nights in April that doesn't cost the earth. Something that I can easily get to from the airport but in the central city. Any recommendations?

I presume you're flying into Narita? It's a bit of a trek from Narita to the centre(s) of Tokyo, but there are direct buses.

There are plenty of reasonably priced hostels around Tokyo, especially around Asakusa. It's on the outskirts of the city, but it is on the metro line, so everywhere is very accessible.

http://www.khaosan-tokyo.com/en/original/ - I think I stayed here. It's cheap and clean, but don't expect any frills.

There are also plenty of 'love hotels' around, these are about 70 euro per room per night, and you'll find many of them around Shinjuku and Shibuya.

    I recommend The Oak Hotel.
It's cheap in a cool area, very central and cheap

My friends stayed there when they came to visit me in Tokyo and it was very handy. I live in Tokyo :) The hotel is a direct train from Narita airport using the "Skyliner". Get off at Ueno station and its only a 10-15 walk from there. I love Ueno, it's a cool area! Very central and on at least 7 different train lines!

Sorry NekkidBibleMan but I don't think love hotels are the way to go - they're over priced and only usually for a "rest" hmmmm for an hour or two.

Most love-hotels offer a nightly stay (usually from 10pm-10am, but it varies!) for in an around 10,000 yen, depending on the kit-out of the room, day of the week etc. The fact that it's per room and not per person means that if you're traveling with two or more people, it can work out just as cheap, if not cheaper, than alternatives.

Love hotels are also an interesting tourist experience in themselves!

Park Hotel Tokyo, its about €130 per room per night but fantastic hotel with amzaing views over the city, we stayed on 34th floor and had Park Hyatt views for a third the cost. Its beside train station (can't remember name). Get the Narita express from airport too, not that much more expensive then bus but much faster and more comfortable...

I stayed in The Hilton (Shinjuku), Dai Ichi Hotel (Ginza/Shimbashi) and Keio Plaza (Shinjuku). All generally good prices. We had 2 or 3 people per room though and that proved to be good value.

I'd recommend all 3. Excellent hotels for the price.

I stayed in what was called the Tokto Metropolitan hotel in Ikebukuro back in 2006. I was nice enough. Just had a look on the web and it seems to have been taken over by Crowne Plaza.

I second this hotel recommendation, stayed there in November, awesome views, could see Mt fuji also. It's connected to both the Shimbashi and the Shiodome metro stations

I'll third this .... amazing hotel, and the staff were lovely. The heated toilet seat and heated non-fogging bathroom mirror did it for me!!

:) Yeah, the ones in lobby (beside lift) were amazing. Had sensor so the lid rose automatically, started to heat and soft lighting illuminated the bowl when you entered the cubicle, if god (or budda/abraham/ganesh!) had a toilet it would be that one!!

Did you get one that played music and sounds of flowing water to hide any 'noises'? :D

This will be at the end of a five week trip so money will be a factor.

Are taxis a real option in Tokyo or is the metro the way to go?

I stayed in the Shinjuku Prince hotel in the end. More than I really should have paid but it was very central and next to the metro and jr trains. Thanks for all the suggestions, it was very helpful.

Endorse that.... stayed there.... can't remember the train station but its the end of the Ginza line...walking distance. Bus to close by doesn't cost too much by TYO standards. Go to Outback steakhouse for the bit of western grub
