    Anyone use this guy? http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=10&sort=7&cat=27&page=2

Trying to find a reasonably priced replacement/alternative to the kit lens as a gift. Have currently loaned my 17-85 IS and the user is very happy with it, but ill be wanting it back shortly and looking to buy a replacement walk-around without spending a bomb.

Any thoughts of this one, nice range on it, doesnt seem to do as well in the reviews as the 17-85 IS though, any practical feedback?

    Cheers

Don't know about that lens but I was after a walk around recently for my 400D and after a lot of research I decided on this Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. Sure, its not very long but it is really really sharp and perfect for low light too with a constant f/2.8, I must say I am very happy with it so far, although the focusing sound is kinda strange..
I guess it depens what this person wants to photograph and which end of the 17-85 they are using most..
And of course the Tamron lacks IS and USM.. but still a great lens, especially for the price, can be got for ~300 euro online.
Im sure there will be a load of people with feedback on that 28-135 anyway as that was the one on "offer" in argos for a while..

I got this lens on "offer", if you can call it that, more like a price mess up, but either way, i really like this lens, i'm still a "beginner" but it's a great walk around lens to replace a kit lens, that's what i bought it for. I've gotten some great pics with it. I dont know if the IS really makes that much of a difference though, although it's nice to have all the same. I found the lens to be quite crisp at 28mm and it's wide enough as a day lens. I'm sure there'll be much more informative posts, but for me, a beginner, this lens fit the bill.

It was basically for the entire period of the last argos catalogue..(Aug 07 -> Jan 08) unfortunetly the price has been fixed to 590 now from 290..

I picked up one of these in the states two years ago for 440 dollars , I got it when 28mm was the widest lens you could get for a canon 20d besides the kit lens , its a good lens , but you will want wider , 28mm equates to around 40 on a aps c camera , and while its quite good , theres always shots you wish you had a wider view for.

The kit lens for most crop frame digitals is around the 17 - 60 mark , giving the same view as a kit lens for a film camera , which is usually 28 -90 or so , you cant help getting the feeling that this lens is intended for full frame or film cameras.

For me , this is a walkaround for my film camera , I use the 17 -40 on my digital most of the time. You need a lens starting at 17 or so for a good walkaround on a crop frame digital.

I had this lens for a while and I suppose it was about average. You're really paying for IS and USM. The image quality is OK, not really that much better than a standard kit lens and as Mathias mentions, the wide end is not at all wide enough...

I've one for sale as you know, little used. In fact the last shot I took with it was the shot that won the Street comp;)

As a fellow Boardsie, I'll give you a good deal on it:D

It's an excellent lens, the reason I haven't used in a long while is I bought a 24-105 L which is more or less the same focal lenghts.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I doubt id be happy with the lens if it were for me, id want to break the range up with a few options rather than one. Like I said though, im buying as a gift for someone who isn't a die-hard but will need a decent walk around lens (so that I can get my 17-85 back hehe). Tbh its looking like this lens, or just getting another 17-85 for him. The 17-85 is probably a better walking around lens, but there is a decent enough price difference to consider too.
