.308 for target shooting isn't a great choice of round for a beginner jb. It's expensive, so you can't shoot as much of it as you can with a .22; it's long-range, so you have to start off learning everything at once instead of doing things in stages; and there aren't as many competitions as for .22lr stuff.

.308s also need a lot of care and attention, both in absolute terms and relative to .22lr. Cleaning, feeding, pretty soon handloading - that's a lot of stuff to learn. If you've only been shooting a few times, I'd think it wasn't time to get your first rifle at all (personally, I'd say wait until you're doing well before you consider buying - start holding the nine ring easily and then start thinking about it). If you're determined though, I'd recommend that (1) you consider a .22lr instead, and (2) you talk to the lads who run the midlands range first. Several of them will own several rifles and can show you the differences and you'll get a much better idea of what you want as a result. Also, look at the competitions you want to take part in and as many others as you can get to see. The choice of firearm is exceptionally dependant on the end use envisaged....
