I heard there is a problem using a Mini DVI to DVI adapter with a DVI to VGA adapter. What exactly is the problem and is there anyway of fixing the problem?

The arrangement of the pins is such that the DVI to VGA adapter won't physically fit on the Mini DVI to DVI adapter. The solution, unfortunately, is to buy a Mini DVI to VGA adapter, thus giving Apple more money.

Sorry to bump an old thread but is this the same with a DVI to HDMI adapter?

Should be fine. I'm using a Mini DVI to DVI adapter plugged into the MacBook. Into that I've plugged a DVI to HDMI cable. Works no problem.
