Operation Transformation - RTE 1 Thursday nights 8.30pm. Great viewing!

Full info and past episodes here: www.rte.ie/ot/

There are two reasons I'm highlighting it in this forum:

    (1) Many of the regulars here are weight-conscious and these guys' journey might act as an inspiration to adopting a healthy lifestyle.

    (2) There are practical recipes designed by a nutritionist made available (and the shopping lists) and videos of the food itself being prepared. I've gone right through them and have been inspired to try at least 5 of the dishes listed. :)

Anyone else enjoying this series as much as me? I've picked Louise as the one whose progress I'm tracking.

Normally I'm not a big Gerry fan but he doesn't really feature in this series.

I think they've been stuck in revealing clothing in order to truly highlight their progress. Trust me, good clothes hide a lot!

Hi, I watched episode 2 and I found it very inspiring. I've tried watching online but it doesn't work for me. Has anyone had that problem?
Also, is it possible to download all the previous weeks diets and shopping lists?

    Thanks!
    D

You need the most recent version of Realplayer to watch them. You can download that here .

And yes, you can view previous clicking on the relevant day in the top right hand corner of the page of any leader's profile that you are viewing.

Are the recipes on the website for 1 or 2 people??

I watched some of this last year, and thought the calories restrictions were cruel especially given the size of the people.

    They're all one person servings.

Moonbaby I'd be inclined to agree, but the dinner recipes were still good. I'd love to see how those folks are doing now.

I think they revisit the leaders 3 months after each series, mainly to see if they've stuck with it.

This series annoys me. The calories seem about 1,000 per day - unsustainable over the long-term inho - and the weight targets are often too high, sometimes 4, 5 or even 6 lbs in a week (and not the first week, when that kind of water weight loss is possible). I watched one episode where a guy lost 2.5 lbs one week (great stuff!) and his target was 3 lbs and they gave out to him and said he wasn't following the plan! Over half a pound difference ! As if weight loss is that precise and scientific that there aren't things like fluid retention etc. that get in the way! It's not as though he has put on weight or even stayed constant.

They also don't seem to be educating people on how to read labels / pick their own food which should be the main purpose of the show imo. It's all about following the plan to th eletter. How will people manage in a few weeks when the series is over??

Good in theory, but implemented wrongly.

    (Sorry for the rant! :o)

completely agree with you for these people they are very over weight with probably zero self confidence the last thing that they need is an ear bashing when they've lost 2.5 pounds as opposed to 3 pounds!

I wouldnt agree with a lot of that ... They ARE advising people to check labels. Fair enough the weight loss sounds high in some cases but if someone has a lot of weight to loose that might not be a bad thing (within reason).

The guy WASNT following the plan, he didnt have a clue (like many people, through no fault of their own) what was really "healthy" or not .. its like the idea of people thinking all breakfast cereals are healthy ... Dr. Eva visited his house and educated him on what to watch for and how to check labels for fat / sugar content etc , I also thought it was good how she was able to help him find healthy(ier) alternatives to stuff he liked e.g. which cheeses are lower in fat etc .

He had still lost 2.5 lbs without 'following the plan' though. And they laid into him for it! Not the way to make people feel better about themselves imo. He was obviously still cutting back and exercising even with not following it to the letter. And that was last week's show - i.e. about 3 or 4 weeks into it, and only then are they showing him how to read a label, simply because he was not 'following the plan'. So for those who are following the plan, are these people getting shown how to understand nutritional labels?? I'm not so sure to be honest.

i think the most important thing is that he was educated on what to watch out for, the guy even said himself that he genuinely didnt have a clue about what was "really healthy" or not and that he benefited from the advice given.. he though cheerios were a great breakfast (probably the result of misleading advertising) - at least he can now make the decision on whether to follow the plan to the letter or not. I thought it was a great idea also to visit the supermarket with him ... Its a sad fact that most people are swayed by misleading advertising and packaging on food!

I guess my point is, should they not have been doing this with all the contestants from the start?? I have the feeling some of them are mindlessly following a plan without actually having a clear idea of the number of calories / amount of protein / carbs/ fats etc. they are consuming, and when the eight weeks are up and they have to fend for themselves without every meal being laid out for them, they may begin to falter. Just my opinion though.

I just have two suggestions. First of all exercises -they are great and effective but I am very much surprised that they not include warm up and cool down! If you start exercising without warm up this can lead to serious injury ,specially if its people who where not exercising since school probably! That's really wrong! Second -diet plan. I think menu is ok ,but still much to much carbohydrates and I would eliminate fat (oil) completely -cook more on steam ,and in water rather then fry. Very surprising. Other problem with menu is it's quite expensive. If I would buy exactly what dr. Orsmond suggest I would spend double of my weekly food budget. Not every one can afford this and she is disaster in the kitchen! All her food looks awfull. I understand she is not a chef ,but doctor -but why is she cooking then??? Her pizza was hilarious an who eats pizza when on diet anyways?
    Wrong ,wrong ,wrong

Have to agree about Gerry Ryan!
I just don't get how he has the right to give out to these people about not meeting weight loss targets etc when he clearly needs to shift some weight himself!
