In case anyone was planning to buy one, one quick caveat.
BBC have a new freeview system that is supposed to launch in March this year with better specs than this.
Hence the sale. (No prices yet for the Beeb system though)
But this is fine for a different satellite like Hotbird or Astra 1.

LIDL & ALDI have these FTA sets 2-3 times a year @ around 79Euro, so the "100 Euro off" is a bit of a scam

They are usually around 100 Euro, still the 100 Euro off is advertising fiction at its best/worst.

a viable option is to sign up to sky basic package for a year
get the installer to connect all 4 cable on quad LNb

After a year u have a free to air system with sky card get
the BBC hd receiver if u want then it works on same satelite

Sky free to air will have their epg also

Could someone please tell me how i could find out what channels are available on this?
My girlfriend is Hungarian and it would be a great surprise if i could get her national channels.
In what way will the new bbc system be different to this one?

So (cable/Sky aside) what is the best way of getting access to all the free to air channels (i.e. RTE 1+2, TV3, TnaG, UTV, Ch4, BBC1+2, etc.)? Is there a single satellite solution with no ongoing subscription?

Simple answer, get a FTA satellite and combine with an aerial for the Irish as these are not available FTA on satellite. You will then get Irish and also all the BBC (1-4), ITV (1-4), Film 4, lots of music and news channels and few other good ones. Aerials can be done dirt cheap too, i put a 5 euro uhf on my satellite bracket (looks gammy but still, works a treat!), 12 euro amp, 10 euro power supply and combining box for tenner to combine aerial and satellite! No sub.

Thanks for the reply. Am i right in saying(according to taungs links) that hotbird has three Hungarian channels and astra has only one.
Would i have to buy a card for these and where could i get one?
If i do get one of these packages would i still have the free to air(uk) channels?
Thanks again. I am getting excited about this idea now because i know she misses home and would really enjoy this.

Better off diverting these questions to the Satellite forum, but I don't think this will work the way you want it to. Astra 1 and Hotbird are at 19 degrees and 13 degrees. You can get a dual-LMB on the dish to receive channels from both of these at the same time, but you won't get anything from Astra 2. You'd need a 2nd dish for that. There are a few English channels on Astra 1 and Hotbird, but not all the BBC, ITV, Film 4 etc.

Great. Thanks for that. So Astra 2 is for the english channels? I could do without them.
Would i have to pay for Astra 1 or Hotbird?

Those Hungarian channels I linked you to are free to air, so, no need to subscribe to anything....and with a wee bit of ingenuity it is possible to get Astra1, Hotbird and Astra2 from a single dish....

What is the combining box exactly?

You can receive the two satellites through one dish with a monoblock lnb or the use of a bracket which attaches to the dish and you can mount multiple lnb's on the bracket. The first option is the easiest as the monoblock is set to work with 13 and 19 degrees. Link to monoblock below so you might get a better idea

Bear in mind mono blocks are optimized for central Europe so do not work as well this far west as two single lnb's

Most 80cm dishes will support 3 lnbs, the triax td78 for example has an optional multi lnb bracket which will receive astra 1, astra 2 and hotbird.
