Do Ps2 games work on Ps3?

Sorry if this has been asked before but couldn't find in search. Partner won a Ps3 in work for Xmas and thought my old PS2 games would work but they don't seem to be supported. Is this normal?

Only the 60 and 80gig models come with ps2 compatability I think, the 40gig one doesnt, it has no bc
