For a girl the Ixus 80 is ideal because its available in a pink stylish look and its not crap inside.

I bought myself a Sony-Ericson Ki mobile phone a little while back with almost as much call-credit thrown in as I was paying. It does reasonable snaps with some kind of flashy LED nightlight. Best part for me is I can snap documents from about credit-card size upwards and email them off the phone and translate the text into a wordprocessor with ABBYY - a really handy alternative to a photocopier.

i would agree with this. as compacts go, this one seems more aimed at the women of the world to keep in the handbag and not worry too much about it. also good for teenagers etc.

there's a new 12mp ixus due that would be a good compact for people who want good pics without the hassle of a dslr

The Ixus 960 IS is 12.1 Mega Pixel. But the images are supposed to be better on the Ixus 860 IS which is 8 Mega Pixel. Too much noise on the 12.1 sensor on the 960 IS.

The pixel wars are getting silly. In fact its becoming a bigger loss.

Photos taken on these cameras tend to be use in three ways only.
    1. Viewed on the camera LCD screen. This screen has a res of a few megapixels, a 6mp is no different to 12mp
    2. Viewed on a computer screen. When it the picture is 4 mp +, it must be scaled to fit the screen for viewing. so here 6mp is no different to 12 mp
    3. Printed. If the picture is printed at 360 DPI, at A4 size. not every pixel will be printed, so 6 mp is no different that 12mp

What are the downsides, you pay more for a camera. You can take half as many photos per card as the image size increases.
There is no need to go above 6mp for a compact

That's an old design, we had it on the shelf in Currys for at least a year before I left.

well the handy thing with ixus is the crossbar menu thing has the option to decrease the size of the photo you take, so you can take advantage of the pixels.

it is a kind of e-penis thing to own a 12mp compact, but if they get it right (loose the noise, etc.) i would be tempted.

having said that, i have my eye on the 450d ;) ...it's just time to upgrade to a "real" camera
