Higher Diploma or Hons Bsc

What is the difference bewteen a Higher Diploma and a 1 year add on Hons Bsc as they are both level 8 qualifications, what advatages does either off and who would each be aimed at?Does industry recognise the higher diploma the same as the degree?

I think one difference is a higher diploma is often a chance to study something you haven't previously, while an hons bsc would be in what you've studied before.
