In the last day I have dumped a large number of files to clear up some disk space.

I then ran Disk Cleanup and Defrag.

This morning the computer was working OK, but now it is not responding at all.

I just sent a few files via YouSendIt and then went to Shutdown, but nothing happens. When I hold the cursor over the Shutdown button, the screen goes grey (loses colour) as per normal, but when I click on the button, nothing happens. Ditto the Restart button.

Also, Ctrl/Alt/Delete produces nothing. The Task Manager does not appear.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    D.

Can you turn off by holding down the power button a few secs? Note you may lose unsaved data ans I cannot guarantee it won't harm the PC.

Will try that next time it hangs.

As it happens, after I posted the above message, the Shutdown window appeared and stayed on the screen. i.e. it didn't go beyond that stage.

In the end, I turned it off at the socket and rebooted.

Working fine now, but I wonder if something is awry?

    Thanks.

Hi, did you check the event logs? usually there is an event logged after a system starts up following a power-down caused by pressing the power button. Look for 'the previous system shutdown was unexpected'. check the events that precede that in the system and app logs. that may give you an idea of what was going on before you pressed the power button (or plugged it out).
