Holiday in Northern Italy

Hi, thinking of travelling to the north of Italy for holidays in May-time, with other half. Is it worthwhile hiring a place to stay such as a villa or an apartment somewhere as a base to see Milan, the Lakes, Florence etc?
Has anyone done this before? I have checked some sites but wondering if anyone has any personal experience or recommendations?

    Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

Hi, we were thinking of doing something very similar.. Lake Garda, Rome, Venice.. Would all 3 be possible to fit in a 2week holiday?

I rented a cottage in Tuscany a couple of years ago from this website.
Cottage wasn't too expensive, and very nice.

We flew into Rome, and stayed a few days there, and then headed north, and spent a week in Tuscany, visited Florence.

The drive north was scary, on the motorways, much worse than France, the minor roads were fine.

We did the moving around from town to town before and its really no problem in Italy with the trains. We just Rough Guide and the local tourist offices to get hotels, guest rooms, etc and never really had any problems.

In certain towns such as Florence, Siena, etc then you are better off staying a bit outside as if you get a room in these towns they will be very pricey for what they are.

Not sure of the web site but there is a very good system they have called Agritourism which has very good value rooms/apts in the countryside.

    Hi,

Its a lovely place to visit particularly in May. Bergamo is a good airport to fly to.

The main problem is Italian drivers who just love to terrorize visitors.
