    A bit of both.

Anyone with such beliefs has their own philosophy, which can change with the experiences you have. My own beliefs are too longwinded to commit to type right now. :)

    Hi Celtic1888.

To answer your question, I don't know :)

I've been on a few investigations with people from the forum here and anytime there's been anything that would be called a ghost it didn't seem like just a person who continued to roam around. It seemed more like a vague impression of a person, or a memory of an event. I don't know if it would have been the spirit of a person wandering around, or just some kind of impression left behind by a person that we don't understand the mechanism for yet.

If the spirit does survive after the body dies, it's very difficult to comprehend what that would mean, what form it would take, where it would be or how it would behave. If you think about it, so much of our existence is based on our physical senses and the processes of our bodies, but anything of us which survives death wouldn't have any of those. It's existence would be beyond our comprehension. How would you explain colour to someone who is blind?

Sorry, I know that doesn't answer your question, but that's my thoughts on it anyway :)

Also, we have a spirituality forum here that your question may be more suited to if your more interested in the 'belief' aspect of it. I can move this thread over there if you like, or leave it here if you prefer the more paranormal slant on it?

cheers for the replies thus far people...

sure may as well leave the thread here for the craic...

its a topic that i suppose brings the blind faith of religion into it in a big way too...just mad stuff...like a medium contacting a person that has died...what form is the spirit or where does the spirit "hang out" before being contacted...mad stuff

I agree with both above posts - my beliefs are pretty contradictory and would confuse even me if I tried to put them down in words!!

Just wanted to add something to stevenmu's post about impressions. I do think this is often the case, but I also think that sometimes, if somebody has lived a bad life, they can be afraid to move on and so hang around. In my opinion, this is hell, or as close to hell as you can get. Which is ironic as they wont move on for fear of punishment, but this is causing them to punish themselves.

I don't know whether anyone else has noticed this phenomenon - or whether it exists - but let me explain.

When my grandfather (paternal) was buried, my Dad went in to the bookies as usual - and had one of those days when he just couldn't lose. Recently my wife's aunt - who she had been close to - died after a long illness. A couple of days later, my wife had a decent win at the local bingo. She goes every week but never wins anything.

A couple of my friends have had similar experiences. I'm an atheist, I don't believe in any afterlife, but I find this interesting. Has anyone else here noticed anything similar?

On a subject like this, first off, you either believe or you dont. If you believe in it, then you need to find your own way of understanding it. It doesnt always work that someone elses ideas will gell with you. Ive always said its something beyond our full comprehension as we are too steeped in the physical to grasp what it is like. Even mediums who have a kind of inside line ;) on this, dont know the answers.

So each person has to have their own way of understanding it, based on experience, thought and research.

this is where my interest in the paranormal and disbelief in religion clash

Im usually very fact based, if i havent seen it it prob doesnt exist

But creepy unexplainable things happen, so, i dunno!

I cant really believe in one and not the other as they're both linked

    Ah wells......

Aspects of your personality live on in the people who knew you. Eventually these dissipate.

When a person dies, I like to think that his or her soul goes to heaven. :)

it depresses me to think about, but i'd like to think there is another world. I always wonder, if there isn't why so many cultures have independently created the notion of one.

A purple light and a hum....

no one knows and there is no point worrying about it until then, at which point you cant worry about it any longer cos you're dead! :)

of my supernatural experiences, i tend to put them into 2 categories. Experiences that could be put down to a conscious entity or not.

I don't know, but I imagine it's just like before you were born. What was it like when you were a sperm in your daddy's nuts, before you fused with an egg, before your brain started to develop, before you had any 'consciousness'? I would think you go back to a similar state once your brain shuts down, and that's that.

Your being is made up of energy. When you die this energy just changes form. We're caught up in our physical being but this is just an illusion really. Everything around you is energy... the paper cup you hold your coffee in ....even the coffee. Everything. So, when you die you don't really die ..your energy just takes on a different form and moves to a different place that some people like to call heaven! Whatever it is it is a release from the physical restraints of a body, so it possibly is heavenly, particularly for people whose physical bodies are causing them pain, illness or distress.
