Kilcullen turn off M9

Slight rant! - Don't know if many know the Kilcullen turn off the M9 when heading towards Carlow. Its a pretty standard motorway slip road which at the top joins the Kilcullen - Athy Road. At the top of the slip you can go left handily enough and head towards Kilcullen, however to go towards Athy you have to cross the road to turn right.

I usually tuun right towards Athy from this slip which tends to get pretty backed up so you may have to wait in the queue for 4 or 5 mins to get across. What I have noticed a lot is people heading up the left hand side as if they are going to Kilcullen then either doing a shimmy whereby they turn left and then after a 100 yards or so do a U turn and head back towards Athy.

Great for them however this only makes the problem even worse for those of us waiting to turn right towards Athy legally as they only add even more traffic volume to the Athy - Kilcullen road making the legit right turning queue longer. I very nearly had crashed into one of the muppets last night as I was turning right when some toe-rag in a Touareg did the shimmy at the top but didnt even go the 100yds or so to do the Uturn, just went around 10yds and suddenly was almost on top of me (and just to mention I wasnt dilly dallying when turning right)

Sorry for the long winded rant but this really bugs me

oh jesus yeah this bugs the f**k outta me. I do know the road your talking about don't use it too often. I get this alot in the ballymount Industrial area in dublin. I don't know the exact road names but the same thing happens and holds up traffic even longer.

cabrwab, I would say you are talking about turning right from Ballymount avenue area ; http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=ballymount+ave+dublin&sll=53.312839,-6.348188&sspn=0.006615,0.017338&ie=UTF8&z=15&om=0 ; this area - as in turning right onto Ballymount RD Lower from Ballymount drive.

Usually you see a huge queue of traffic waiting to turn right here, the junction is a total disaster and there are frequently crashes, there should really be some kind of traffic calming measure on the Ballymount RD lower. I refuse to turn right here, I will turn left go down as far as the roundabout and come back up it may take longer but i have seen far too many crashes there to be bothered.

To the OP. I know the junction you are on about also. From what I can recall there is no broken white line if you turn left for about 1/4 of a mile, so if they are doing a u-turn they are crossing a continuous white line to do so. You could report them for that.

this used to also happen at the Barberstown junction coming from Maynooth and going right to Clane....

annoying alright but if you can't beat them, join them I say

I live in kilcullen so take that turnoff every day and see exactly what your talking about. But i did see something a while ago that might make u a bit happier. A van ahead of me took the left then went to swing out right as u say. What he obviously didnt see was the police bike coming on the right that he almost ran off the road! lets hope the book got thrown at him :D

I wouldnt mind but the cop shop is very close - if they spent an hour or two there for a couple of days they would catch most of the regular offenders

I have seen this at roundabouts also

On the Limerick by-pass, halfway through heading to Dublin you meet a roundabout, straight through is for Limerick city, right is for the rest of the bypass on towards Dublin

So most of us go into right hand lane and dutifully go round the roundabout in correct lane....cue other gits not content to join queue and going around the roundabout in left hand lane!!!

There a re also a couple of places around Dublin City where cars use left turn only lanes to go straight ahead rather than join queue in correct lane, and then cause slowdown as they try and get back after the junction!!

i could go on but only make me madder:mad::mad:

Ditto coming down the slip towards Lucan village off the N4 east. I'm usually only there in the morning after coming off a night shift but I only noticed what the hold up was a few months ago. Cars going left, then doing a u turn at the Maxol or the chinese restaurant.

Nothing illegal about it in this case but definitely not sporting. Like when cars would go right around the old N4/M50 roundabout to head north on the M50 and avoid sitting in a mile long queue waiting to go left. Although I'm sure I saw the Gardai there a few times pulling people for that stunt.

Yeah nemisis this is around were it is, i do that myself if there is a long line of traffic waiting or find an alternative route cause your correct that junction is lethal.

Im not saying it is illegal but more unsporting and just doesn't help with the blood pressure.

    I don't tjink it's illegal to do the u-turn though....that's the problem

    Lex,
There would be solid white lines for quite a distance on either side of this junction but once they cross where it is a dashed white line they would seem to be legit

I know this junction well,it should have been designed with a roundabout over the m9 but it was built back when there were fewer cars on the roads and it was cheaper to just put two T-junctions instead:rolleyes:.
