Leopard and MS Office Problem.

I upgraded to Leopard recently (last week). All is well except for when I use MS Office. If I click on Word/Excel etc, nothing happens. It's like I don't have MS Office installed. I can see previews of MS files in finder but I can't access them.

Oddly enough, if I log on to my G4 PB using my wifes profile instead of mine, then the MS files work like before the upgrade to 10.5.

Additionally, if I attempt to repair disk permissions, nothing happens - it's like Disk Utility hangs....

Has anyone experienced this.................? Is it fixable.

I suppose the most practical thing to do is simply rreinstall MS office and see if that fixes the problem.

Macfixit has a few threads on this; apparently Leopard's 'Spaces' conflicts with Office 2008 for Mac.

I had bad trouble when I installed Office in my Tiger-using G4 a few days ago. Finally it installed without problems when I was on the phone to Microsoft support (very nice and helpful).

All I'd done was to delete all the Microsoft-related .plst files in the Prefs, and also the Microsoft folder, delete Office 2008 and also leave the computer off overnight.

(Just deleting all the Microsoft stuff and then trying to reinstall didn't help - for some reason, the overnight shutoff seemed to do the trick - I have no idea why.)

Macfixit cites three main reasons for problems: the conflict with Spaces, a corrupt Normal.dot template, and the .plst and Microsoft folder prefs.

    No. No Office apps open.

Hmmm. Interesting. I have spaces turned on in my user profile, but my wife does not use spaces in her profile.

    I'll try macfixit. Thanks.

I presume you are on Office 2004?

Try installing Office 2004 Version 10.3.9, even if it is already installed:

You may need to delete some prefs files

Thanks for the help so far.

Just to recap - if my wife logs in using her own user profile she can use all MS apps with no problems whatsoever. MS Office version in 10.1.0. In my user profile these apps do not work. So I'm not inclined to believe that the problem is solely with MS Office. As I stated earlier, I have Spaces enabled, but my wife does not.

More worrying, I cannot perform verify or repair disk permissions. If I click 'verify disk permissions' the hatched blue bar just sits there - I've left it for an hour but it still seems to hang.

A friend recommended that I download OnyX which may solve my problem, but, worse still, when I click on the .pkg file, it appears I no longer have my Installer

As I type, I am updating to 10.5.1 in the hopes it resolves the issue.

Can anybody shed any further light?

    FWIW - I've a 15" G4 (Power PC) PowerBook - 512MB RAM.

Update to 10.5.1 complete - little difference. Now I get 'verify/repair permissions' to give me a solid progress bar with '1 minute remaining' and it stops there. No more progress is recorded.

I'm thinking of reverting back to Tiger............. :(

Could you just create yourself a new user account, then move all your files to that. It sounds like some dodgy prefs files in your home folder, but if you can't locate where they are, just create a new account and go from there.

Sorry - I should have mentioned earlier, but the disk utility hangs in all profiles. So that problem is not gonna go away by using your suggestion.

I think this could be the problem.

It sounds relevant, all the symptoms are similar to mine - but I'm not using Office 2008. Mine is the 2002 version.
