laptop broken - rescue hardrive

hi my laptop is completely screwed, it basically says it does not recognise that there is a hard drive and just won't get into windows.

I'm considering investing in a new laptop as the price of getting it fixed might well be near enough the price of a new machine. anyone had this problem before or know in and around the price of repairing it might be?

I also desperately want to rescue my music collection from the laptop - this is more important than fixing the laptop itself and if i could do this i would probably still get a new lapper.

How much will this cost and where is a good place to get it done?

    Please bring me good news!!!

    Thanks

if the hard drive is completly dead it would cost a lot to recover your files . If it is faulty but not completly dead you may be able to recover your files or at least some of them.

New laptop hard drives start at around €80 for an 80gb , if you are competent enough to replace it and reinstall os etc it would be a lot cheaper than buying a new lappy.

What make model laptop have you? Have you ran any diagnostics on the hard disk to see if there is a problem with it?

The laptop is not completely screwed, you can buy a new 2.5" 160GB Sata / IDE HDD for a resonable price. The drive itself sounds knackered but, recovering the data might be possible with the right tools of course or else you will find yourself paying a couple of hundred euro to a company like CDR media (Disaster recovery specialists) to do the job.

    New IDE Hard drive
    New SATA Hard drive

Try slaving the laptop hard drive into another desktop PC using a USB to 2.5" Laptop drive adapter (Available in maplin etc) to see if you can pull any files off the drive. If you plug in the drive and hear a ticking noise, well thats not good.Worth trying to see if your datas any way recoverable.
Also reguarding fixing the laptop, replacing a hard drive is pretty straight froward and as Hal linked above you have the choice of hard drives out there which are pretty cheap today, so the laptop might not be a complete write off just yet.
