I don't own one but thay are a great car. The engine is a torquey little thing and will move!
You can fit a family in it and you get a big boot. You wont need an old field to keep it running either.

Nice car. Had two myself - well worth doing a search on here for threads though as there's LOTS of them.

You can bring one to a posh hotel and nobody will look twice at you and you can rag it down a B road heading for 60mph in 2nd gear if you like.

Excellent car... I've owned one almost a year now, best car by a country mile that I've driven up to now. Its torquey, pulls like a train when you put the foot down, even in the higher gears, it doesn't drink fuel, its comfortable, well put together and 100% reliable. Doesn't cost much more to run than your average car, assuming you don't do massive miles, and insurance isn't an issue for you. Whats not to like!

The one in the link there, its been colour-coded by its current owner, which may or may not be to your taste. I personally prefer it left alone.
As Mark said, there's been loads of threads on this topic, a few recent ones too, do the search.

Yeah i prefer the black skirting on the side.

MK5 GTI is an awesome little car. Being driving a 2.0 TDI for a over a year before this, remapped to the gills, thought it was a quick car,,, I was wrong. The GTI is so smooth and powerful. Had mine for a few months now and still not sure when the turbo kicks in.... Try and get a DSG if you can, well worth the extra.....

I like them. 3 door in white would be my choice, with DSG.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,718 ✭✭✭whippet

I have nearly 7months and 20k kilometers done on mine and I still enjoy the thoughts of driving it.

Can be thirsty depending on driving style, you will tend to want to drive the back roads instead of the motorway.

Deffo look for the DSG option, I am so glad that I didn't get the manual !

    3dr + White

... What better way to make a prestigous hot hatch look like a skangery Glanza :D

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 17,859 Mod ✭✭✭✭Henry Ford III

Chalk and cheese my friend. Glanza to me smacks of cheapness, tinny build, and "have a go" mods.

Golf GTI has a certain élan however.

If you can't appreciate the difference, a Glanza would probably be perfect for you :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,997 ✭✭✭omega man

Solid hot hatch but far too many on the roads to stand out for me.

A lot of the replies near-as-damit parrot Clarkson's TG review word-for-word...

White is associated with skangers in this country. Autocar jumped on the bandwagon of promoting white as a suitable colour for the GTI - personally I think red is a good colour. Also, silver contrasts well with the black 'moostache'...

The only VW product I'd consider buying...

Agreed, white is the colour to go for on the GTI.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 499 ✭✭Beanmachine

yeah have to agree with the white tbh. It's only when you go away on holidays when you notice how many more white cars there are on foreign roads especially in warmer climates. The main reason is white cars keep cooler than dark cars as they reflect the sun rather than absorb it like a dark car. I actually saw a new white polo gti the other day and thought it looked excellent.

OP, I have the GTi in red, manual, bog standard. Fantastic car, great fun, practicle, fast, lots of room...

I just wish it was white.

    Get her!

If I ever had the money I'd get it in 5dr, white in colour, 18" alloys and DSG:cool:

theres a new golf coming along very soon check autoblog for final testing, so wont be a facelift as the new model will be brand new so might effect residuals.

Yeah defo the big wheels are a must , i'd also opt for leather plus dsg if the budget permits.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭Plug

any pics? I heard it was just a face lift but they were going to revise the electronics.

Is the DSG that good ?

How exactly does it operate. I know that you get the option of both having fully automatic and sequential using the gear stick.

I certainly wouldn't consider an automatic with a torque converter but having the sequential option would be nice.

How much should I be willing to spend on a 2005 model with relatively low milage. (Under 30,000)

Ah yeah. From videos I've seen, in sequential mode, you have the option of using the gearstick or the paddles behind the steering wheel to change gears. I also like the fact that you get D and S (Sportsmode) to decide at what rev level to change gear. I thought it was a bit odd that VW just didn't give you completely control on the ferocity of the upshifts.

I see parkers.co.uk give the GTi a fuel consumption of 35mpg. Can this be right ? I mean the standard Golf doesn't do much more than that.

I'm considering a 07ish GTI myself. I'd go for the 17'' wheels though - more supple ride/road-holding and less likely to burst tyres on the potholes around my parts.

    DSG wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me I think but I haven't driven yet.

I think its fair to say we would all prefer this gti.

My On-board computer returns 8.5L/100Km (33 MPG) which is an Urban/Motorway combo, 10-12L/100Km (23-28 MPG) on a Urban Cycle....... This is with the DSG box which is suppose to be more economical.... Not driving her like she's stolen obviously:D:D:D Drive it hard and you'll be getting 24L/100Km (12 MPG)......ALOT of fun though:D:D:D:D:D

Anyone like to guess how much it would potentially cost a 25 year old to insure one with only 2 years driving expierience. Clean record with no penalty points. Car value 27,000

Would it be within €3k even ? Would I be laughed out of it on the phone ?

    €1200?

I'd say an insurance company would be able to guess closest to the amount you are likely to pay.

Quinn Direct wouldn't quote me saying that I'd need to be 30 before they'd take me on.

I always thought Insurance companies had to at least give you quote, although it could be as high as they want ?

2 years no claims bonus, all on my own insurance and car. Full licence for just over a year

    I'll prob try Hibernian tomorrow.

Insurance can be rough on the GTI.
    I'm 32 and my insurance doubled from a 2.0TDi of similar value.:mad::mad:
AA Insurance told me there's a 200% mark-up on the GTI, whatever that means:confused::confused:

It means anything with "GTi" on the badge gets screwed basically... I'd love a Mk. 5 but couldn't get quoted by my current insurer (Quinn), by FBD, by Axa, Hibernian or Eagle Star. Stopped looking about then... I'm 26 with 2 years' NCB. When I was getting my own Mk. 3 I was ringing for quotes, even then with only 75% of the power of the Mk. 5 and 10% of the value some people wouldn't quote me, yet they'd quote me on an Audi A4 Sport with the same power output, and would quote me a good bit cheaper than the GTi if they did quote on the Golf. Meh, I wanted the Golf anyway, so there ya go ;)

Doesn't sound good. I'll try a few other places tomorrow. Had my heart set on one.

Seriously though, I thought that Insurance companies had to quote you a price.

Just bought a 1.4 golf gt sport 170bhp. Insurance is 1570 euro fully comp. Full license held less than a year male aged 21. Check one out and you may change your mind. My gf's sister's boyfriend just bought his 07 gti today too in same colour so they were parked next to each other. Both have plenty of poke. You won't be disappointed with the GT though. Could be a decent compromise. Insured with Hibernian. And yes I checked a few times to make sure its marked down as the 170bhp model, have it in writing too.

Didn't know that. Might make a move there. A CPU remap would bring that up to 200 bhp fairly fast.

Agree, have driven the gt, nice bit if kit and fast too. Still, had my heart set on the gti:(

Know what you're saying lads. Its a nice car. So is the GT though. Not too many differences really though. Also yeah you could remap easily but with the power thats in this I doubt you'll need it. Tops out at 240km/h and does 0-100 in 7.9seconds. Gti isn't all that faster really. Save some money too.

Just an option for you guys though of course if the GTI proves not to be an option.

Couldnt get an online quote from any of the major insurers so I tried 123.ie for kicks. Put in all my details in respect of fully comp for a gti and it came up with a quote of 4k. I then looked for a quote for a gt and got 4k again. Becoming a little suspicious i then looked for a quote for a 02 focus and it came up with 3600, just a tad on the expensive side i think you'll agree. Finally i looked for a quote for a 08 997 Turbo, value 215k. It returned a price of only 6k full comp - not bad at all!

Is this usual behavior for 123.ie, i had never used it prior to this occasion.

Can anyone tell me, please, does the GTI with DSG pull off quickly from a standing start? IE can you pull out quickly and smoothly into a space on a roundabout from being stopped?
Or does it need to get up to turbo revs before it starts "moving" ?

Possibly, and it would be a serious error if they are doing so. 170bhp car being treated as a 75bhp car. If they are doing so, and cop on to it (the mention of which on a high profile website may alert them btw) then next years renewals may come as a bit of a shock.

the GTi DSG will move at any revs, it has plenty of power even at 1500rpm .. depending on your driving style you can leap off the line and slam on the breaks to get the spot on the roundabout or you can drive normally and take up your position ... a gear box and powerful engine does not turn it in to a missile .. even F1 cars can be driven fairly normal !!

Cheers for that. Edited in the above post. I'm not complaining. That in itself could turn into a debate so I'll stay away from it on this thread.
