So I have been looking at some guitars lately that I might purchase. Seeing as I have a good amp I need a good guitar :D

So far these are the 3 I have liked outta the pile and would love a second opinion on them.

    Ampeg Dan Armstrong Plexiglass
    GALLERY_GIT0011048-000_1_images400.jpg
Im not too sure on this one, but the reviews say its good but I would preferably like a personal opinion if anyone has played it etc.

    Ibanez PG301
    GALLERY_GIT0005537-001_1_images400.jpg
I really like the look of this one, and the pup selection would be my fave choice outta the lot. plus one of my favourite guitarists uses it :) Once again a personal opinion of it would be nice!

    Gibson Les Paul Std. Faded
    GALLERY_GIT0007209-004_1_images400.jpg
I like gibson and I know what they are like but Im not too sure do I wanna chance their quality control hearing a few recent stories.

So what are your opinions on these guitars? Im leaning more toward the Ibanez but of course other recomendations are highly welcome.

Well my mate didn't like the Paul gilbert. He didn't really explain why but he just said it was nothing special. You should probably go too Dublin & try it out.Personal id pick the Gibson:D

The the Ibanez available in dublin?

I played the gibson a while back when I was last in dublin and was impressed by it. But I would like a different guitar tbh.

FWIW Woody was playing a see-thru Dan Armstrong at the Slaine gig.

I think they're way cool but OTOH I have never played one. I've read they're very heavy.

    Just my stupid opinion but:-
I dont like the F holes on that Ibanez and if that Lester has the finish I'm thinking of, then in real life the finish looks like a photocopy of a guitar.

Should have one in Musician Inc or maybe Music Maker. It's a superb guitar.

As far as the Gibson quality control goes, I'd make sure that I played a few of them, and was very satisfied with the one I was getting.

I'd go for the PGM personally.
The Gibson Faded series are nice enough guitars but I've heard the LPs are nothing special.
The Plexi one seems too gimmicky to me. It might be nice to have if you already have a couple of guitars lying around the house but I wouldn't have it as my main player.

At the end of the days its your choice. I'd try out those and a few more guitars in your price range and see what you think. Something might really catch your attention.

Edwards Les Paul. Great guitar, great price and probably better quality than the gibson tbh

I am the proud owner of the exact Les Paul modle in this shot and couldn't recommend it more. I'm aware of the "quality" issues that seem to be doing the rounds on these forums but mine is/was flawless. A little bit of a set-up and it sounds incredible, easily the sweetest of my little collection.

I would say .. if you are getting a Les Paul.. get a second hand one from the Buy and Sell or whatever. Get a normal standard, I have a STD faded, and STD.. and would prefer the STD over faded. But that's my opinion.
Better value to be had in the secondhand market though.

The faded has Burst Bucker pickups though, which to my ears wouldn't be as sweet sounding (more kind of rough round the edges from the Burst Buckers) as the Alincos on a normal STD.. but I've no real idea what they are throwing into them these days.

    P.S. though - http://www.ishibashi.co.jp/webshop/guitar/esp/edwards/gif/e-lp-112ce.jpg - wow.

Avoid the LP Standard faded. I bought one, and believe me I wanted a Gibson Les Paul since I started playing! Absolute ****e! I have a highend Tokai now and it is far far superior.
I'm not knocking all Gibson LP's as I am sure there are many great ones out there but the LP standard faded is horrible, in look and feel. It does sound nice but that's it. Sold it within a few months.

Sorry Nemisis :) just my opinion!

I am saying get a normal standard - not faded. But get it second hand, you can get a normal standard Les Paul for the price of a new faded. ish :)

I use my faded as a backup guitar, it doesn't have the same meaty characteristics as my primary guitar. I would sell it though truth be told and get something a bit more.. familiar.

    +1 ;)

So basicly take that Les paul off the list and see around for Normal Standard.

Well right now its between the PGM and Ampeg.

How would the Plexi affect tone/sustain?

Yeah, unfortunately Lee took a break from the forum round that time. :(
Its cool that you can get Kent Armstrong to make custom drop-in pickups for it too. :)

The case looks schweet also!

also, i wouldn't be willing to spend about 2 grand on a guitar without playing the model i'm buying first, that's called playin the lotto.

Not a massive Ibanez fan but loved that PG. played one for a while and hell of a versatile guitar and lovely neck

    Damn you Lee!!:(

Yeah thats a pretty cool little feature. The fact you can swap the pups out so easily is a brilliant idea. Would be handy for studio work!

    Ah its so tempting really..

Yeah I get you, but I dont think anywhere would stock the Ampeg which is prolly the guitar Im most interested in.

But for what its worth I will try and get to dublin and play a Normal Standard Gibson and PG301.

You should get some second Gibson Les Paul standards on ebay from the UK now. The Sterling is cheaper than ever and with a bit of patience and know how, you could get a bargin.

About €1500 for a second hand one, the same as a Faded Les Paul new.
You would not have the quality issue associated with Gibson if you go second hand.

I own a '94 Gibson Les Paul Standard in Lightburst and love it.
I have also just aquired another Ebony Standard for about €1000 from an irish seller on Ebay. Playabilty, action, tone....all great. They are not perfect, but there is no guitar that can claim to be.

I own a Vai Jem Japanese Ibanez and always practice with that at home. a different kind of guitar altogether, but i like both.
I have just ordered an red Ibanez JS1200 from a UK seller on ebay brand new for €1121 all in...postage and tax. They are €1699 on Thomann.de

I'm in the process of selling an Edwards Les Paul with hard case for about €650. The John Sykes model. It seems a shame to sell it, but i need to finance the recent buys. Well built alright, top quality, Seymour Duncans, but there is a slight feedback issue with it. I think it might be the SH-6 in the bridge position.

Anyway, the Plexi, i am not sure about. Are guitars not supposed to made from wood for that tone and sustain etc.

Shop around kid and have a good think, listen to some experienced guitarist when you get to talk to them.

^Yeah Im looking around on Ebay at those. But so far their around the 1800euro region which is a little over budget.

And I saw that LP your selling. pretty nice I think!

Supposably the Plexi was the material he found which had the best sustain.?

Im looking at PRS's from america like on Chrisguitars but Im just thinking is it worth the hassel with import duties and tax. But I will see definally!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,817 ✭✭✭✭Dord

If you're looking for sustain pick up a pine bodied Telecaster. :)
Obviously Fender don't make them but a few custom places will build them. The ultimate sustain!

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 7,943 Mod ✭✭✭✭Yakult

pine? Thought that wood isnt great for guitars?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,817 ✭✭✭✭Dord

You'd think so, but it sounds great! Kinda heavy but gives a great tone.

Check out http://www.pinecaster.com for some sound samples, its a site dedicated to building pine telecasters.

Are you sure you are looking at the UK sellers.....they should work out at about €1500.

Even from the States with postage and tax you would get one less than €1800....and there is a chance that the customs might have a day off when your axe land at Portlaise

Check out item 170188970228 on ebay.
That is your stuff....all in for well under €1500

    :)

Haha, you know me well anyway.

Yeah the ampeg I think is winning. The handy thing is the pick-up changing. So simple and quick.

If you are going for - 170188970228 (the ebay listing) - make sure and try a LP with a 50's neck before hand. They are not to everyones liking.
Other than that Ithink it's lovely..
